OT: R.I.P Jim McKay

Just read the news that legendary sportscaster Jim McKay died a few hours ago. He was not just the best sportscaster that ever lived, he was head and shoulders above the rest. I still have memories of him covering the Munich games tragedy in 1972. ( most of you are probably much to young to remember this but it was tragic)

I used to love watching the Wide World of Sports in the '60s and '70s with my brothers and Dad. "the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat".

I didn't really know who it was to be honest a bit before my time it seems. My dad was kinda choked up about it though. My old man said he was oldschool, one of those sportscasters who gave the events he commentated dignity and a sense of class.

I got choked up just reading your post about your Dad--its ironic that the news broke as I was waiting for the Belmont to start--Horse Racing was McKays favorite sport. What your father said about him was absolutely true--when he was broadcasting, it was never about him, his ego, etc, it was about the event and those watching the event.

Before my time, but I have seen old Wide World of Sports episodes many time, and when you see old sports clips with his voice in the back it lends a sense of class and prestige to them.

He was awesome. I got a little tight in the throat when they announced his death on NPR today.
A true loss.

The guy was an icon. He just had one of those great voices and he paired with a classic cadence.
