I think we are on a 20 year stretch of non rememberable films winning best picture. Probably have to go back to 2004 when lord of the rings won since we’ve seen a widely loved popular film win best picture

No Country for Old Men? there are plenty of other best picture winners that people still talk about today, especially because the filmmakers are still actively making films. one of the least memorable, Green Book, is still talked about for being a dog shit best picture winner

But that changed last year, I decided to watch all 10 nominated films in 2024 and I wrote a little article ranking them. Anora

The Brutalist

A Complete Unknown

Conclave

I'm sure there are other examples but I CBF to look, Matthew and Jared winning for Dallas was epic as were all the other awards it got.

Yeah I mean I personally enjoy a number of films, no country for old men being a great one that you are right is still talked about. But I think in terms of wide spread popularity, the last couple decades are behind what we saw in the past.

To be fair, the fires hit the elite hard this time around so I don’t think the narrative is quite the same as if it only hit common people. A strong theme here in Los Angeles at the moment is to come together and overcome. If anything, I think cancelling the Oscar’s would give the impression that the elite quit when disaster impacts them directly while ignoring it in the past which would be a bad look.

Show business is Los Angeles's industry so yes I think people want to see the town get back to work and return to a sense of normalcy as soon as possible, I absolutely do think that

But let's be honest, you would think negative of these "celeb circle jerks" no matter what, you're just using the fires as an easy out this time
