another interesting bit of history is that employer-sponsored health insurance took off during WWII. There was a wage freeze, so to attract employees companies offered health benefitsHealth insurance can cost you more sometimes. They'll charge you out the ass if you have good insurance, but will write off a lot if you're uninsured. Literal insanity. And it started in Texas! The first health insurance company was Blue Cross Blue Shield, which was a sort of hospital network discount club for teachers in Fort Worth-- an HMO in other words. They had to be unmarried women. Once you were married or knocked up, you couldn't be a teacher anymore. Saner times? Some would say yes.
