I'm not sure how often you have random people on your street corner doing crack however it would still be illegal.

Why not also make drug facilities run by licensed doctors, nurses and drug counselors where individuals can go and use. Also these places could supply them too.

I'm a recovering heroin addict and it is bad here on Long Island with the amount of people dying because of fentanyl laced heroin.

I'm Australian so I'm likely nowhere near as pro "free market" as you are. There's just too many instances of corporate greed using "the free market" as an excuse for destroying millions of lives through blatant lies for their own gains. If you misrepresent the dangers of your product to the detriment of millions it should be punished severely.

Especially those who aggressively market highly addictive opioids while simultaneously perpetuating false statistics about the addictive nature of the drug and in so doing create an opioid epidemic killing hundreds of thousands.

I think that one of the central roles of a government is to protect consumers and the general public from this sort of corporate greed. It's unrealistic for the average Joe from the street to have an incredibly high understanding of both chemistry and physiology to see through these lies. The death and destruction caused by these lies resulted in more American deaths through overdoses and escalated violence than ww2 and letting it slide because "people should be able to see through your lies" just isn't cutting it for me.

If they had been honest about their product and how addictive it was that would be a different story... but if you lie about your product and the result is hundreds of thousands of deaths you should be killed painfully and slowly.
 
That state has become a do what you want shithole. Why not? They allow people to do whatever the fuck they want with no consequences. This should work out just fine for them. Prepare for the homeless population to absolutely skyrocket higher than it already is.

completely for it. spend the same amount of money that we used to use to jail them and process them on treatment. drugs are not a crime and should not be treated that way.

state should sell the drugs and fund treatment and other programs.

also -- i dont do any drugs.

It is a huge waste of money to prosecute personal possession, never mind that adults should be able to make their own decisions about drug use just as they already do with booze, cigs, weed, and countless other 'risky behaviours'.

Such measures should be accompanied by channeling those cost savings into further eduction (particularly for young people) and rehab resources for the minority of drug users who will develop problematic use that requires professional help.

I haven't looked into the specifics but it worked wonders for Portugal. So there are working examples to look at.
 
A population under the effects of drugs is easier to control, i'd imagine. Isn't that right out of the dystopian novel, 'A Brave New World,' by Aldous Huxley?

Bingo. They're channeling the money into addiction assistance and education programs. Much better use than prosecuting those people.

I support legalization of drugs purely on principle. However I think it will have a net negative affect on the state.

Most people point to Portugal as a shining example, but it's still in the top half of countries by drug abuse. Places that have extremely strict laws like Singapore, japan, Qatar, UAE, etc. have virtually no drug abuse issues.

But I think anyone is free to put whatever they want in their bodies, it's not up to the government to step in and say.
 
Over a decade after Portugal decriminalized drugs with great success this is still a debate?

And I can't help but laugh at the "if it's legal everyone will do it crowd". Weed is legal yet I don't smoke, alcohol is legal but not everyone is a drunk. Silly argument.
