I've had both situations and closed office was much better. I could close the door when on a phone call that was 5% work related and 95% bullshitting with associates, vendors, etc.

Open office just sucks. Nothing says "we value our employees" like lining them up where they can be observed always, giving them no privacy or anything that is "theirs". I can see where it saves money on office space, but absolutely cost you more in efficiency IMO. I can also see that it would also depend on what you are doing - call center where everyone is selling / tech supporting the same thing, having access to a supervisor or other knowledgeable people could help. In a setting were a team each accomplishes a different bit of the overall mission, no. Also I gotta say, having my own cubicle, with my own computer, desk, cabinets, tape dispenser, stapler, and office supplies makes me feel a little bit valued. Having pictures of my family, my training certificates, pictures of my old ships, my degree, and my Batman Hot Wheels hanging on the 5 ft high walls is better than NOT having those things. I can leave my hot sauce, splenda, and coffee mugs laying about with impunity in my 10' by 8 ' slice of workplace heaven.

Closed if I had a choice. I'm a software engineer and those open spaces would give me anxiety.

Open offices are awful, nothing good about them (other than cost for the employeer).

Frankly I think one of the main reasons so many people prefer to work from home is that they now don't have an office at work. If people had an office, they woudn't prefer home.

Our office has sort of half cubicles, I think its the best approach. Everybody can see each other somewhat, but would have to stare over a short wall to see what their neighbor is doing. Basically straight up creeping and spying. It allows for easy conversations, but nobody really looks at each other's work.

The problem with open space is that you can't watch porn.

Of course you can. The trick is to just not give a shit and eye contact if anyone says anything.

Closed. Open doesn't work, you inevitably work with dumb people who just sit around and talk all day and its distracting.

If it's a job where you're busy then closed for sure, to minimize distractions.

But if it's a place that gets slow sometimes then it's actually more fun to have open space so you can chat with co-workers.

Closed for sure, I spend all day on the phone basically so it would annoy them and me to hear me talking shit all day

Closed. I loved my last office. It had a bathroom with a shower.

Open office space is generally more productive. Less chances to fuck off.

closed office but gender neutral trough style self composting toilets for socializing.

Open office is fine if people don't get all in an uproar everytime I need to rip off 7 or 8 farts or call someone a cunt when I don't like their email response or unbutton my pants to adjust my junk.

Being someone that visits different offices all the time and deals with the people within..... I do find closed office people more territorial and confrontational in general, it's like someone gave that little person a cave to hide in and defend, most of the time I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to jab me with a improvised spear and show me a cave painting they did with their own poo.........

Open office people have different issues...........

A mix.

My office has 2 sliding doors on opposite walls, it's effectively open plan most of the time but I can close them whenever I want. I'd say I leave them open 75% of the time.
