Movies Only God Forgives - Why it was hated?

It's a spectacular movie aesthetically. It was his next major project after Drive, I think it suffered because he picked up a lot of new fans with that movie who probably found OGF kind of bizarre and less accessible (That said I think Drive is a lot better than OGF, and OGF is one of his weaker movies overall when you mix in the Pusher movies and Bronson)

I think it's his best film, and Drive while great it is definitely worse overall and a lot more hollywood-esque that's why it got a massive success compared to it.

Artsy fartsy stuff that will only appeal to a select group of film nerds. I personally liked it, but it's really no mystery as to why folks didn't.

It was also coming off of "Drive", that while "artsy" in it's own sense, had a straight forward "revenge" arc that was still palatable to general audiences. OGF on the other hand, is a lot more avant-guarde and impenetrable for general audiences. It was not what a lot people who loved "Drive" were expecting.

Just putting this out there, you don't to couch your response or have to be self deprecating because you like a movie or director. Movies do not have to make sense to be enjoyed, warts and all. I came to be a fan through Valhalla rising, which I watched because of mads. I watched drive much later to avoid the hype

Drive was loaded with stye and art house direction but was easily recognizable as a genre revenge film at heart.

Only God Forgives was another step towards deconstructing that style. People showed up expecting Drive 2.0 and got a much less accessible film.

Then he made 10 hours of Too Old to Die Young as the ultimate test.

Last year I watched most of Gosling’s films and hated this one the most. Well, it’s the only one I actually hated tbh. Just not for me.

I like it a lot. But I'm a refn fan

I enjoy this movie, but Gosling is my least favorite character I think. He doesn't do a bad job, it's just a weird character and he isn't a good fit imo. They probably would have done better off with someone else playing that role, I didn't feel like he fit in with the rest of the family.

The Pusher Trilogy is one of my favorites of all time however. I need to go re-watch that actually, it's been a couple of years.

I believe all 3 recently popped up for free on prime

Oh hell yeah, that's good to know. Thanks! I love the way they tell that entire story. Such a cool way to see not only the story but to experience each character.

Drive is far ,pre accessible

One of my favorite movies actually. I never understood the hate for it.

I liked Bronson, Drive and the Neon Demon but I found this one pretty boring.

Maybe I should give it another shot cos I watched it about 12 years ago.
