Movies Only God Forgives - Why it was hated?

Artsy fartsy stuff that will only appeal to a select group of film nerds. I personally liked it, but it's really no mystery as to why folks didn't.

It was also coming off of "Drive", that while "artsy" in it's own sense, had a straight forward "revenge" arc that was still palatable to general audiences. OGF on the other hand, is a lot more avant-guarde and impenetrable for general audiences. It was not what a lot people who loved "Drive" were expecting.

Agreed. It was just OK and in the end, pretentious film making.

A lot of the film was illusory and/or ambiguous. As were many of the scenes given all the hallucinating they were throwing in. The director got caught up in the imagery and made it to messy. It's OK to leave a little bit open to interpretation/speculation, but that was far too much. They would have been better off with flashbacks as opposed to hallucinations, so the audience knew what they were fucking dealing with.
