One Random Irish Guy Calls For MMA Ban, Bashes Conor McGregor After MMA Death

I was gonna get mad at this; but then I realised that if Ireland doesn't want MMA than there's all the more for Australia.

Twats will twat.

Couldn't resist when this was the first pic that pop up when I googled the guy

Indeed. Its crazy because you'd expect soccer to have more being that its been around longer, but I'm always surprised how many deaths have occurred in just the last 20 years or so. Its really crazy.

What gets me is the number of deaths from head injuries. Obviously heart failure is the number one cause but head injuries is certainly number 2.

Soccer gets an unfair rep (from people who never played) as a soft sport full of divers but it is incredibly taxing on the body.

^I heard people didn't actually die in the coliseum, or at least it was not always to the death. Anyone enlighten me?
10-20% of the gladiator fights ended in death. They had referees to rule the fights, too. Just like modern day combat sports, but much more dangerous. The false picture the film industry paints shouldn't be taken seriously.

This is just another way to hate on Conor McGregor.

People hate it when they come from the same place as you and are nowhere near as successful.

Death in gladiatorial combat wasn't rare. Estimated between 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 leading to death. Average lifespan of the gladiators was only mid 20's.

And originally, they were conquered peoples and slaves, but it did deviate from that eventually, since, like said above, it cost a lot of money to keep these guys housed and having guys stick around meant making more money in the long run. That isn't the time this guy is referencing, obviously. Dude is a dipshit.

Not to be rude or spark any heated argument but 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 kind of follows along with my statement of fairly rare. Mainly what I'm referreferencing is the true execution of the gladiator (if he was still after succumbing to the stronger foe) a lot of the gladiators died after the battles due to obvious lack of modern medical practices.

What's so funny is Ireland just got sick of a loud mouth bragging douche

Conor brought it on himself

They must really hate you then.

But as far as the article goes it's another ignoramus making emotional appeals against something that simply isn't to his taste. There are deaths in every sport and they are all tragic, but acting like sports, which channel primitive drives in a more civilized way are the end of civilization is the opposite of the truth. For many young men, sports, including martial arts/combat sports, offer a format that keeps them from doing far more horrific and tragic things. Many competitors would be robbing liquor stores and beating up people in the streets if they didn't have another place to direct their wilder energies. If done right martial arts teaches them good values and to put aggression into a controlled context.

People fighting for sport that train professionally for it? And a few people die occasionally like all other sports? EVIL!

Using force by killing thousands of people with firearms in wars - just fine.

Roman history is one of my favorite time periods. You are correct in the statement that death in the arena between two gladiators was fairly rare. Generally speaking they spent a lot of time, effort and currency bringing these fighters up and if one were to be executed by the others gladiator the executioners master generally had to pay expenses to cover the others loss. On another side note I've always found it interesting how gladiators are portrayed. They weren't the muscled up warriors you would expect but generally fairly overweight as the extra fat acted as an armor to reduce fatal blows.

Stop ruining my glorious image of Spartacus.

As stupid as this shit is.. I enjoyed this quote:

“Something deep in us thrills to serious violence,” wrote Brolly. “Up to the end of the 19th century, public executions were the premier spectator sport in England. When Henry Fauntleroy was hanged a Newgate in 1824, the crowd was estimated at 100,000. If a smart promoter like Barry Hearn had been alive then, he’d have hired Michael Buffer to say, “Let’s get ready to haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang…” and get a half-naked dolly bird to hold up notices between executions.[/img]

Human nature.

100% corrrect. Roman medical conditions were far ahead of their time, though. Just not on par with today's standards, obviously.

Very bad. Sounds like a condescending twat know it all. He wants to use historical facts to psycho analyze MMA fans? How about historical facts after that time period, like the millions who followed the nazi party and were racist toward black people.

We're an evolving species. This guy can fuck off, his literacy isn't fooling me into thinking he's anything more than a cunt

Huh? You just proved his point.

“If an American hedge fund started ‘Ultimate Combat’ where the fighters use weapons and the battle is to the death, we’d have a queue of men wanting to sign up."

That's a big if.

Lots of culturally bereft, dipshit google historians popping out on Sunday I see.

These apes could have been in church if we had more foresight.

Funny, Brolly is mostly correct. I don't know about the banning and protecting humans from themselves and the appeals to emotion about family , but everything else is spot on.

There's certainly more going on than he and critics of MMA generally like to admit. But I think it's high time that the prize fighting community comes to grips with the accuracy of statements like this:

“The truth is that violent sports are a rich man’s play thing, where poor men try to put each other into a coma for our amusement."

I believe it's possible to be a fan and follower of the sport and still grapple with these realities.

WOW Joe Brolly, I wonder if anyone has asked Joe Duffy about his opinion or any other gobshite who hasn't a fucking clue but wants to give an opion anyway.

Or maybe someone might post something from an actual jounalist, who actually covers the sport and has a valid point. Like this
http://www.independent.ie/sport/mma...thinking-not-emotional-rhetoric-34631644.html

Fergus Ryan: MMA is going nowhere and the way forward is rational thinking, not emotional rhetoric

In the aftermath of the tragic death of Joao Carvalho what we really needed was a period of calm.

This would allow the authorities carry on their much needed investigations without distraction. But more importantly, it would allow all those affected by Joao’s death, especially his family and loved ones to deal and grieve with the devastating loss.

What happened in the National Stadium is above and beyond the normal subject line of a sports media review. It wasn’t the equivalent of a disallowed try or an offside goal. A young man died.

Instead of calm, rational reaction we’ve been subjected to a number of emotional opinion pieces. I’m pretty sure they’re being driven by emotion over reason because for all the bluster and eloquently put opinions, there is very little evidence of fact or research.

So bizarre have been some of the opinions that it reminds me of the Donald Trump quote at a campaign rally in South Carolina in December. Despite Donald making wild and entertaining statements he reckoned he’s worth listening to because “I went to an Ivy League school. I’m very highly educated. I know words, I have the best words.”

Well you may have the best words, but that doesn’t mean they all make sense or add anything meaningful to the conversation.

- Kenny Florian, from the cheap seats of the Colosseum.
lmao!

Dude you should get out more. In Latin American culture it is not at all like that. I'd encourage you to come down to South Fla and go to any of the numerous nightly pickup games and see how many ":eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:s" you can intimidate. Would be hilarious.

I mean your liberal use of the word ":eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:" just screams ignorance, how old are you and what is your education level?

This. I live in GA and am 6"1 250 former defensive soccer player and would not play in the men's organized rec leagues: those guys will kill you. Don't believe me? Try it yourself. Many are former/didn't make the cut/got injured at the least semi pros with a chip on their shoulder and they WILL hurt you. Seriously. Lol. Have you not noticed how many international MMA fighters also play soccer? It can be some violent shit. Watched pride? Soccer kicks? smh
