Indeed. Its crazy because you'd expect soccer to have more being that its been around longer, but I'm always surprised how many deaths have occurred in just the last 20 years or so. Its really crazy.
10-20% of the gladiator fights ended in death. They had referees to rule the fights, too. Just like modern day combat sports, but much more dangerous. The false picture the film industry paints shouldn't be taken seriously.^I heard people didn't actually die in the coliseum, or at least it was not always to the death. Anyone enlighten me?
Death in gladiatorial combat wasn't rare. Estimated between 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 leading to death. Average lifespan of the gladiators was only mid 20's.
And originally, they were conquered peoples and slaves, but it did deviate from that eventually, since, like said above, it cost a lot of money to keep these guys housed and having guys stick around meant making more money in the long run. That isn't the time this guy is referencing, obviously. Dude is a dipshit.

What's so funny is Ireland just got sick of a loud mouth bragging douche
Conor brought it on himself
Roman history is one of my favorite time periods. You are correct in the statement that death in the arena between two gladiators was fairly rare. Generally speaking they spent a lot of time, effort and currency bringing these fighters up and if one were to be executed by the others gladiator the executioners master generally had to pay expenses to cover the others loss. On another side note I've always found it interesting how gladiators are portrayed. They weren't the muscled up warriors you would expect but generally fairly overweight as the extra fat acted as an armor to reduce fatal blows.
“Something deep in us thrills to serious violence,” wrote Brolly. “Up to the end of the 19th century, public executions were the premier spectator sport in England. When Henry Fauntleroy was hanged a Newgate in 1824, the crowd was estimated at 100,000. If a smart promoter like Barry Hearn had been alive then, he’d have hired Michael Buffer to say, “Let’s get ready to haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang…” and get a half-naked dolly bird to hold up notices between executions.[/img]
Human nature.
100% corrrect. Roman medical conditions were far ahead of their time, though. Just not on par with today's standards, obviously. Not to be rude or spark any heated argument but 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 kind of follows along with my statement of fairly rare. Mainly what I'm referreferencing is the true execution of the gladiator (if he was still after succumbing to the stronger foe) a lot of the gladiators died after the battles due to obvious lack of modern medical practices.
Very bad. Sounds like a condescending twat know it all. He wants to use historical facts to psycho analyze MMA fans? How about historical facts after that time period, like the millions who followed the nazi party and were racist toward black people.
We're an evolving species. This guy can fuck off, his literacy isn't fooling me into thinking he's anything more than a cunt
? HowHuh? You just proved his point.
Funny, Brolly is mostly correct. I don't know about the banning and protecting humans from themselves and the appeals to emotion about family , but everything else is spot on.
Fergus Ryan: MMA is going nowhere and the way forward is rational thinking, not emotional rhetoric
In the aftermath of the tragic death of Joao Carvalho what we really needed was a period of calm.
This would allow the authorities carry on their much needed investigations without distraction. But more importantly, it would allow all those affected by Joao’s death, especially his family and loved ones to deal and grieve with the devastating loss.
What happened in the National Stadium is above and beyond the normal subject line of a sports media review. It wasn’t the equivalent of a disallowed try or an offside goal. A young man died.
Instead of calm, rational reaction we’ve been subjected to a number of emotional opinion pieces. I’m pretty sure they’re being driven by emotion over reason because for all the bluster and eloquently put opinions, there is very little evidence of fact or research.
So bizarre have been some of the opinions that it reminds me of the Donald Trump quote at a campaign rally in South Carolina in December. Despite Donald making wild and entertaining statements he reckoned he’s worth listening to because “I went to an Ivy League school. I’m very highly educated. I know words, I have the best words.”
Well you may have the best words, but that doesn’t mean they all make sense or add anything meaningful to the conversation.
? How
lmao!- Kenny Florian, from the cheap seats of the Colosseum.
Dude you should get out more. In Latin American culture it is not at all like that. I'd encourage you to come down to South Fla and go to any of the numerous nightly pickup games and see how many "s" you can intimidate. Would be hilarious.
I mean your liberal use of the word "" just screams ignorance, how old are you and what is your education level?
