Television ONE PIECE Live-Action TV Series (Season 2 Special Look, post #186)

I'll admit it's a pretty low bar overall but one of the best live action shonen manga/anime adaptations. I don't hate it but I also don't love it after 4 episodes.

3 episodes in

It's good as a OP live action can be, and for once does'nt show usual western "i will fix it" arrogance

Casting so far it's absolutely awesome, i was'nt sold at all only on Zoro, but he can act the part very well
Main actors are all very good at sell the right vibes, the thing that Oda was involved and the one who had last word must have worked great, even secondary characters have been pickd with great care

Attention to detail is pretty great

Only negative note i wish they went bit softer with hair dye colors, at times it work (example Zoro's green even looking fake feels normal) but in some other cases (Nami and even more Shanks) it make them feel like ridicolous cosplayers with cheap wigs... wich is bit a shame considering they made waaaaay more absurd stuff look "legit"

The episodes are well written, cover lot of the manga events with natural pace

Overall i'm loving it, would say 7 or 8 out 10

I am not super familiar with the source material but it’s leaps and bounds better than the Cowboy Bebop live action adaptation
People picked to work on CB did'nt gave fucks, and were free to do what they wanted
It sucked, fans hated it and the people that did it, and Netflix that was the first to be happy they netflixed this shit made a 180 and was also the first to be like ok it sucks let's cancel it

OP is done with love and author condition for letting Neflix do this is that he hold their balls in his hand
He supervision the product and have the right to say "NO"
Some fans will still cry and wine at this and that, but honestly while maybe not "perfect" is no doubt a product made with great dedication and would say almost excessive love to the fans (as some things could have gone smoother being it more loose on some elements) at risk of alienate a bit the casual watcher

In better world every manga/anime that get western live action should be like OP, but very few authors have the power position to tell Netflix "ok, but you will be my bitch"

It's actually a great live adaption of the source material. I watched first 3 episodes and I'm quite impressed with the detail, cast and translation of powers unto real actors and special effects.

They managed a fine line between being too goofy and still serious but at the same time, this is my main issue aswell.

One of the big qualities of One Piece were and still are it's over the top goofiness, graphic, cartoonish reactions and expressions. Like Sanjy when he's seeing a big titty lady, Luffy and Chopper reacting to a shitty robot etc. This won't translate and is mostly, sofar left out.

It's still very solid. Buggy and Kuno were excellent in their roles, Luffy is great, Zoro and Usopp are working for me too. Colby shines and only Garp seems a bit off.

I wonder how they want to tell the story tho, with their tempo, it will take another 25 years of production to get to the end.

That is good to hear. What I got from what I have seen of One Piece is that it is a loose and goofy adventure story.

Just finished episode 1. They condensed a lot and there’s changes to the story…obviously. It’s not bad at all though. Pretty decent, actually. You can at least see they’re aiming to get the spirit of the characters. I didn’t like who they cast as Luffy when I heard about it, but he’s okay after all.

My favourite part is Luffy saying don’t all great fighters call out the name of their attacks. Lol. I kind of wish that was a thing in real life. Like back in the schoolyard when you’d pretend you were a power ranger.

Just finished episode 6 and it's pretty solid.

Episode 1 and 2 were great and got me really excited. Arguably the best version of Buggy in any medium and the actor stole the show.

Episode 3 and 4 were a pretty significant step down and got me a bit worried again. Kuro looking uncanny valley, Usopp actors dynamic not fitting in with the group as well, acting overall worse, way too much use of fish eyed lenses and weird shots which is one of the shows biggest drawbacks, Zoro getting bottled and the show feeling cheaper and tone off.

Episode 5 and 6 were solid to great again. Mihawk actor crushing it, Zeff actor crushing it, Sanji's back story the most well acted and emotionally impactful.

Will watch the last two tomorrow. Should have been a 10 episode season but hopefully the next one will be.

Overall, I'd rate it 7.5/10 so far as a standalone, but as an adaption probably 8/10. Love the chemistry between most of the cast, some of the actors doing brilliantly, love the unapologetic commitment to the world, like the story telling, like the CGI, yet, some of the acting is a bit wooden and delivery falls flat, practical effects and costumes range from awesome to kitsch, tone is somewhat uneven and I dislike how it's shot sometimes.

BTW 83 percent critic score and 95 percent audience score on rottentomatoes right now which I think not a single person would have thought possible for a One Piece Live Action series.

Edit: Also, freaking LOVE how they introduce the bounties.

I had no knowledge of the source material, and I fucking loved the entire series. I'm already looking forward to season 2. I will burn Netflix to the ground if they cancel it.

Fwiw I also really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop, so my opinion is apparently questionable at best. At least according to Sherdog.

Never watched the anime or knew much of anything about the series. Gave this a shot with my son and it's pretty damn good. Just the last episode left and I fully care about everyone's motivations and goals, a rare feat nowadays.

Bebop was meh to me but then again I watched the original. Exact opposite for One Piece, never saw the show before this. Were you an OG Bebop fan?

No, that was all new to me as well. Probably why enjoyed it more than long time fans. Found it very entertaining.

That's probably the key, it's like reading a book before the movie, it's never gonna live up to your expectations.

Episode 2…CHOP CHOP Cannon!!!! Glorious.
Buggy. nice. Great work showing his cruelty with the audience.

Episode 3…hmmm. Kuro’s actor is a bit weak to me or wasn’t directed well in terms of how he’s moving around. Acting overall seemed weaker as well. Sigh @ bottled Zoro. I guess they need to keep the characters…vulnerable for the general audience.

Did not like Luffy’s actor from what I saw him in before, but he’s doing a good job here.

Why did each episode cost so much? The background designs??

It's funny because there was a OP cosplay event yesterday. It's the most low effort of all cosplay theme. I feel bad for the kids with parents who grew up watching OP and being Luffy no. 34.

Much better than thought. Anyone know where to start watching the anime or when in the anime wpuld ot pick up from where the live action ended?

Well I am on the last episode of live action, google search shows the last episode of LA is basically up to 45. As there are slight differences maybe start around 42.
I think I only watched to about 100 ish episodes of the anime.

Honestly surprised at how many non-fans are liking it, pretty cool.

I would watch it from the beginning, but not the regular version. Watch the One Pace version which is the anime cut down to the manga. It's the best of both worlds and removes a lot of the filler. They have both subbed and dubbed, and you can find it here or just google One Pace.

The LA was decent, but the anime, while a slower build, has moments that are way more epic. As awesome as Mihawk was in the LA, Zoro vs Mihawk and the Arlong Park arc is significantly better in the anime.
