Sage Northcutt's post-UFC run is not off to an auspicious start.

Cosmo Alexandre knocked out Northcutt in just 29 seconds Friday at ONE Championship: Enter the Dragon in Singapore. Alexandre landed a big right hand to Northcutt's jaw on the first exchange and it was over. The bout was contested at 185 pounds.

Northcutt (11-3) was on a three-fight winning streak when he left the UFC as a free agent last year. The Texas native, once considered a blue-chip prospect and future star, went 6-2 in the UFC and seemed to get on the right career trajectory after making a move to Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, Calif. Northcutt, still just 23 years old, fought at 170 and 155 pounds in the UFC, but will compete in ONE at 185 due to the Asian promotion's stringent weight-cutting regulations, which does not allow for dehydration.

Alexandre (8-1), a championship-level kickboxer and Muay Thai fighter, is a veteran of Bellator. The Brazilian has now won eight in a row in MMA. Alexandre, 37, last competed for ONE in November, falling to Nieky Holzken by second-round knockout in a kickboxing match.

Well... it's not too unexpected.
This guy Cosmo was 7-1 (with the lone loss his debut).
Sage should not jump weight classes like they are nothing.

Great punch.

Apparently Cosmo was former Bellator.

Here are some gifs for your viewing pleasure (or schadenfreude).

Back to the ufc were the comp is a lil bit easier

That’s a sweet ring is this the first time they use it?

Lol at people not knowing who cosmo is. Dude gave Parr al he could handle of course he shitcanned some mma stooge.

This could’ve been every UFC fight for Sage if they didn’t play favorites and try to slow-build him.

Instead they would pay him like 40K to show + 40k to win to fight Cody Pfister.

At least ONE is getting their moneys worth!

It was an eternal mistake by Sage to overplay his cards with the UFC. He had a sweet deal in getting paid very well, getting all the UFC marketing behind him while being the best protected fighter on the rooster.

UFC was ok with using him as a gimmick like Punk.

His delusions about how good he is really caught up.

With One his true skill level is revealed and after some fights he will have small value left as the low end fighter he is. Brings back memories of Roger Huerta.

Goddamn, I guess being 19 and having strep throat causes you to circle towards the power hand of world class wrecking machine......

Sage isn't even a hype job at this point, he's cemented himself squarely in the middle of the pack. Still young but if he gets his shit pushed in a few more times like that he won't be able to continue on.

Brutal stuff, boys. The JBG is eating well tonight.

I told you guys that Cosmo will KTFO him ;)

Sweet spot, right on the ear. Oh well. 23 years old, he lost a fight, he's 11-3, not 3-11. He'll get over it and get back to the gym and make a better account of himself next time because I imagine he doesn't like the taste of losing. This makes One Championship look really good as far as the perception of their level of competition is concerned to the idiots out there.

Huerta was pretty legit though; not a Title Challenger by any means, but a fringe top-10 guy that they slow-played because of his fighting style (aggressive brawler), good looks, Mexican heritage (they were after the cross-over boxing interest at the time), plus his /interesting background, etc.

He had a FOTY candidate against Clay Guida and then lost decisions to Ken-Flo and Gray Maynard when they were still super-legit, so lets not write Huerta off out-right, the dude was a solid fighter but not elite, at least he did end up fighting some of the top of the food chain guys as soon as he was making solid paydays. He over-played his hand but after being the first UFC fighter to get the SI cover I think he saw that as a clear sign that he deserved to get paid like a Star (wasn't necessarily wrong, just misread the UFC and didn't realize how important their stranglehold on fighter pay is since where they make most of their profit is by under-paying talent).

Sage should've been happy to re-negotiate his contract and make less while they still continued to feed him guys that were not elite, could've spent that time working on his stand-up and overall MMA game. But from watching him fight he's been pretty much figured out as his style/game haven't progressed (and wasn't deep to start with); he's an elite athlete with a super-limited skillset and lots of holes in his striking defense and ability to grapple at a high-level. Probably training karate his entire life has led to physical/mental burn-out and he never seemed fully committed to training to be an MMA fighter so he never adapted his game. Look at how much better Stephen Thompson used footwork and feints very early in his MMA career to control distance and read opponents, he clearly committed himself to the MMA game even though he got in much older than Sage when he made the switch.

ONE is 2-1 against UFC fighters. 3-1 if we count Askren vs Lawler.
