Once Maia retires...

Aw fuck it, theyer both welterweights, top 10 (maia?) We need answers.

We talk alot about dudes declines I rememner Maynard getting his face getting slapped around every other kick by Ryan Hall. It was fucked lol

Ya Funky versus Maia would be dope
Shields style. Jake stayed in Maias game and won. Ben could hell yeah.

In that case (kinda, love Cigano!) would Cody Garbrandt count? I see him as a boxing specialist.
I remember him taking Cruz down. I think his offensive wrestling is also decent. His fight IQ - not so much.

Maia isn't on some crazy high unreachable level. He's not even the best submission guy in UFC. Limited boring arsenal that he can't even impose half the time. More of a hold n hugger with more time to work bc the refs don't stand only him up as fast for doing nothing. Hopefully there's not another one like that.

Did your mother drop you when you were a baby or is it bad genes?

Maia isn't one dimensional. He has really worked on his wrestling and especially his boxing during his decade plus with the UFC. It is a bit hard to progress further since he started these changes in his 30s.
I think the most one dimensional/specialist guy is probably Askren. Even someone like Hall has a serviceable odd striking game that serves to frustrate his opponent and allows Hall to implement his game. On a side note, someone I always found lacking in "technique" and one dimensional is Hands of Stone. He is smaller than everyone in his division, he doesn't seem to know how to grapple well but he finds a way to win due to overwhelming power. Even his striking isn't that clean looking.

I agree, maia isn't one dimensional. He improved his wrestling a ton and his footwork is underrated, he also has very solid defense on the feet.that said, he is widely considered the closest thing we have to a specialist.

He did some wrestling in HS I believe, or college. UFC also says he's got 100% TDD, but he's def a boxing guy in my mind for whatever reason.

It's interesting you brought up Cigano though, boxers aren't considered specialists in the sport on top of the fact that by a long shot wrestling/submission specialists seem to be able to get farther. Cigano was a good shout. +rep.

Khabib is a specialist and has reached heights Damien never did. Use him as your example not Maia.

Khabib relies a lot more on striking to set up his takedowns in order to get to his specialty. Don't get me wrong Maia strikes too when needed, but it's nowhere near as much as khabib does and especially on the ground.

Jake only won a split decision because he won the kickboxing in round 5 by throwing slightly more. In the grappling Maia had more takedowns and the more dangerous positions--shieods back. Shields had a nice reversal then stalled in Maia's guard.

I would love to see Maia vs. Askren.

Askren is probably my answer too. He isn't even relatively competent in anything else lol, hope Jorge lights him the f*ck up.

I need to see it again, i just recall Jake top pos

Need to watch it again. I only recall jake in top position. Oh and Dong hyun kim KOing Erick silva was on that card and it was war.

And Ryan Hall made me laugh, i forgot a competition was taking place at moments im rewatching a few fights now lol

Khabib is very well rounded, has way better wrestling and can fight standing as well-look at the Conor punch.
A striker with good TDD=boxer/wrestler(Chuck)
A wrestler with great ground game=wrestling/BJJ(Ronda)
Those type of styles are not one dimensional, they require 2 skills.

I would say Askren is the one coming close to Maia, even more than him. Even worse standup, weaker BJJ and better wrestling. Maia sometimes fights standing for a round, Askren barely throws a punch.
Askren is a great example.

Stand up and punching power of a gazelle.

But his wrestling is phenomenal

Don’t even mention Arona. People like him are the reason why submission only tournaments are necessary. Dude’s probably the least dynamic of all the adcc champions to compete in mma. BJJ proficiency is not measure by submissions? The fuck you talking about. There’s a reason why the two modem day bjj GOATs are Roger Gracie and Marcelo Garcia—because they were finishing people in tournaments while others were fucking with the rules to win by points.

Why wouldn't you mention Arona? The only other guy in the same discussion as him (that discussion being the best and most successful BJJ guy to compete in mma) is Werdum. He fought and beat some of the scariest guys to ever step in a ring; he was one of those 'scariest guys to ever step into a ring'.

Anderson neutralized DC’s top game on short notice. No one says DC is not proficient as an mma grapplers. He simply ran into a guy that had an answer for his game.

So the answer to DC's game is to spend 5 rounds getting your face punched with no hope of offense.

My, my.

  1. Arona blanketed most of his opponents in Pride, as he did in ADCC. I normally enjoy watching grappling in tournaments and mma. This dude had to be the most boring I’ve ever seen, with weak gnp for someone as powerful as he is.
  2. DC/Silva was 3 rounds. DC landed no punishment for those 3 rounds. Watch again.

I'll give you blanket, but he was also a winner; something a lot of bjj fighters aren't. Like Marcelo Garcia, for instance.

So the way to win is to lose?

My, my.

I'm pretty sure Charles Oliveira has the most subs so I would say he's a specialist
