On a Scale of 1 - 10 how much of Gane's UFC career was protected?

Do you believe he went through a murderers row before getting the title shot or do you believe he was matched up favorably against slow but heavy handed strikers?

Did he fight the best grapplers in the division?

He actually hasn’t been fed near as many shot legends as Ngannou has, but yeah his resume is lacking in grapplers. Not a murdrerer’s row, but a small string of solid wins (plus shot JDS).

The only guy he didn’t fight who would have given him trouble is Blaydes. Oleinyk is ancient and Espino and Romanov are behind him in the rankings.

He beat Rozenstruik, Volkov and Lewis in a row. That's a pretty strong strength of schedule to me in this modern day heavyweight division.

Tbh the only really competent grapplers in the top 10 are Stipe(Even then, he doesn't use it too much) and Blaydes, it's not Gane's fault that the this division is shallow and those two were unavailable to fight at that time.

hw is a weak division. doesn't take much to get a title shot.

Tai is next in line, if you actually saw that guys grappling it is horrible. I remember watching one of his fights where it kept going to the ground and thinking my black belt coach that is around 220 could take him.

He wasn't particularly protected, but his hype was hilarious.

He's the #2 ranked HW only behind the champion but has no wins over any of the top 5.

JDS went through a murder's row to get his title shot. Gane's run to his title shot was kind of similar to Costa's.

Yeah, exactly. And I like Gane, but JDS’s resume of Werdum, Struve, Cro Cop, Yvel, Gonzaga, Nelson, and Carwin, all basically in prime or close to it was bananas. Then he beat Cain for the belt and defended against Mir. Crazy, crazy run.

It doesn't take much at HW these days. Look at who JDS took out on his way to the title.

The whole division is almost all slow but heavy handed strikers. Would love to see him against Curtis though.

Really? If he could "take him" -- then why not step up and make some money?

1/10, From his initial muay thai run to TKO and then stepping up to the UFC, Gane never took the easy path and when through all the process of having harder opponents each time, he was given no gifts, its his skillset and his talent that bringed him where he is now and had a run to the championship after juste 3-4 years of MMA practicing.

TS. i invite you to go see his highlights and all the interview he had ( and from fernand , his coach too, the goal of ciryl and his team is to make the most money and having the most success, without taking less risk of having physical problems later in his life, he puts a lot of effort on it, we can call it the GSP path if you wish, Ciryl is taking a lot of his inspiration from him, having the most success but without health risk later. So yes, mostly a point fighter but it works, and he have the unique abitility to move and be evasive at will.

I wanted to ask him that while watching it. He had a run in mma at lhw but didn't stick with it, but after watching that i was wondering if he had thoughts of a comeback. Tai is a real can on the ground. the fight was an embrassment.

It wasn't even tai, but i remember thinking my coach could easily beat the guy he was fighting too. Of course when i say this i am underestimating their punching power

this was the fight

Dude has only been an MMA fighter for a short time, and started easily outpointing/finishing big names.

Gane vs Blaydes needs to happen.
Indeed, it will be his biggest test yet. Thing is, i dont think blaydes is stronger than Ngannou on the ground, one thing that ciryl saw is he said Francis wasnt technical on the ground, he was just very strong, i dont think Blaydes will have that power to keep Gane on the ground if it happen.
