Oldest scary movie that doesn’t suck

Return to Oz is creepy as fuck.

a twisted sequel of a sort. I think it's pretty well made, & it disturbed the shit out of me as a kid

holy fuck i totally forgot about this movie. you definitely just gave me something to watch on my day off.

Without a doubt 'The Exorcist' from 1973.
Even now, in my 40s, if I watch the whole movie I will not be able to sleep at night...
Where did the 'demon' come from? Why was the girl chosen? Where does it go after the priest is dead?
Special effects were pretty decent for 1973.

The demon got to her through the Ouija board.

The Shining seems to stand the test of time

The Thing 1982 too, for the most part, maybe a couple of scenes that were awkward
I think The Thing is pretty dated. Watched it a couple of days ago.

Alien and Alien II aged so much better. It's crazy.

I’d argue that most of the better scary movies are older. Lets face it, most of the writing these days lacks originality.
Try It Follows. I liked it a lot.

The Thing or The Shining?
Sorry, I was talking about The Thing.

I'm not saying it isn't an important or thrilling movie obv.

(BTW I just rewatched Alien II and noticed how they mention that the insurance for their space ship is like 42 million. Lmao at that number.)

Yeah The Thing uses all old school effects. Totally boss for the time and it helps if you're a fan of that style. People that are, like myself, will argue that it holds up. Have you seen the prequel that came out a few years ago? That had updated effects, of course, and was very similar to the original but still worth a watch.

I'm gonna binge all the Alien I can find some day soon. It's been too long.

I think the dialogue and the scences are a bit awkward in The Thing, too.

I was constantly thinking "OK, now that scene tries to show that this or that is happening. Awesome!"

Maybe I read to many overhype comments before, lol.

It is a very hyped flick.

The demon got to her through the Ouija board.

Yes, that could be. But I was also reading this:

"The demon was attracted to Regan for several reasons. It had met Father Merrin in a previous exorcism and Father Merrin is now in a location close to Washington DC. Regan was playing with the Ouija board and made an easy target through her innocence. Regan's mother was chosen to suffer also as was Father Karras. Reagan's mother takes the Lord's name in vain constantly and Father Karras is a priest losing his faith. All these things captured the demon's attention but I believe mostly he wanted to confront Father Merrin once again."

I saw the movie when I was in my early teens and being Catholic it left a lasting impression. The movie is based on real life events of Ronald Hunkeler who was 14 at the time in 1949 and lived in Cottage City, Maryland.

I did research it also. I was quite taken with that movie. I heard the demon's voice from another room at a very young age because I wasn't allowed to watch. I was terrified but the clincher was that my father, a grown man in his 50s, was so terrified also that he left the room. I remember hearing my mother and he arguing over it. He was raised strict Roman Catholic and also excommunicated for divorcing and marrying again. I think he always believed that his afterlife war in peril.

So i see what you're saying. The method he reached just was the Ouija but there was a more grand scheme in place. I got that impression as well.

Did you read the book?

Did you read the book?

That is some interesting information about your family and the movie incident. I'm sorry about your father. I'm divorced myself and don't believe everything the Catholic church teaches or certain things the Bible talks about. I don't believe divorce to be a sin. God knows there are far worst things in this world to be considered a sin. But that is a whole other discussion. No, I did not read the book. I did read a lot about the real life Ronald Hunkeler and his ordeal. I believe the Catholic Church is the only Church to carry out the Rite of Exorcism. In Roman Catholicism, exorcism is sacramental but not a sacrament, unlike baptism or confession. There were some strange things that happened during the filming of the movie.

Really good choices in here, but I agree with Psycho, 1960. We are all desensitized now due to graphic torture porn. But you have to realize that some of these original iconic horror films traumatized people for years. People we afraid to take a shower with many leaving the curtain open after Psycho. Jaws did the same for swimming. I would add House of Usher to the list.

Lol definitely creepy. When I was a kid I used to put roller skates on my hands and feet and go around the house laughing maniacally, pretending I was a Wheeler.

The Shining and the original TCM (1974, I believe).

The Birds and Psycho are others.

I really enjoyed The Haunting (1963) as well.

Agree to disagree, but I do enjoy Alien and Aliens
