No, it was not always that way. Sure, there are examples of it, but it was not the default operating basis of the sport. Back when MMA media did rankings, there was some slight variance among them but they were generally objective and we all had a sense of who truly were the best ranked fighters at that time. This shit where Conor stays ranked for years while inactive, and in a division where he has a losing record, is a modern UFC invention. Same for Stipe not only staying ranked despite not fighting in 2 years, but holding the #2 spot like he was despite not winning a fight in 3 years. Or even sliding Li Jingliang into the Top 15 conveniently so Khamzat can fight a top 15 guy. Interim belts for the most part were done when needed and felt legitimate, like Barao’s interim BW belt or Nog’s interim HW belt. These days they’re manufactured at will and discarded at the organization’s convenience as solely a promotional tool.
Same for rematches. They existed; but there was 3 years between Edgar-Maynard 1 and 2, and Edgar-Maynard 3 only happened because the second fight was a draw. Now every champ that exists gets a rematch, we watch Stipe fight DC 3x in a row, Masvidal steps in on short notice to face Usman (a TS he otherwise didn’t deserve), and somehow the short notice that is used as an excuse to book a rematch…Figgy fought Moreno 4 fuckin times in a row, poor Rose fought Joanna twice then Andrade twice then Weili Zhang (!!) twice…
It’s trash matchmaking.
And I don’t really think Dan Hardy was fast-tracked much either. Hardy was on a 3-fight win streak when he came to the UFC, and he won 4 more straight. It’s true that Fitch had a lengthier streak, but Hardy getting the shot when he did had more to do with GSP having cleaned out a lot of the division by 2010. It was a different scene in 2008.
