Xbox didn't really have a choice. We have to remember the MS CEO wanted to shut the division down. They had to try something new. I thought it was a great idea originally but I also wasn't sure enough people would sign up to make it sustainable. I think we are seeing that it's not and now their games will start heading to PS. The rumors I'm hearing about their next console sound like trash but it's just rumors for now so we will see.

Gaming is just a different model compared to TV\music. On top of that MS is competing with all the top games that are sucking up everyone's time and most of those are FTP. So it's a sub for gamers only and most of those gamers are playing FTP games.
 
I really enjoy my SeriesX, but the biggest aggrovation with it is this -

Somehow & someway the DLC of my games gets erased, or it says an update is required to make it playable. After several months or over a year after not playing a game I come back to it I start a new game with the new DLC features not being installed.

This has happened with both Cyberpunk2077, Wasteland 3, and Halo Infinite.

For most people it'd be an aggrovation just to redownload the DLC, but in my home I don't have internet. I just have it on my phone and I'm going to have to take my SeriesX to a seprate location just to download a few DLCs to make a game playable.

Do you have an expansion card? I think it sucks that we can't use a regular external HDD to store games on like last gen. That might help. Sorry that I don't have a better solution.

Got an expansion SSD.

Double-checked it, and the expansion isn't on it either.

It'd be very weird if DLC/Updates/Expansions weren't engrained in the base game files so all of them would have to be seperately transfered from system to SSD and vice-versa.

Man, that's got me stumped. Contact support. You may have a faulty console. Xbox support is REALLY good. My elite 2 controller went south (out of warranty) and they sent me a new one at half-price and free shipping.

Gear, that's every platform, now. That's just how games work. PC, console, handheld, phone/tablet...doesn't matter. Some updates aren't required to launch the game, but they frequently are.

Yeah, and that's pretty weak.
My SeriesX is connected to the internet a few times a year and downloads needed updates for the titles I own & download new ones.
So I play a playable game (A) a while back.
I've updated several games since then, and (A) isn't one of them.
And suddenly (A) isn't playable now but now have to download updates or re-download the DLC/Expansion to make it playable.
Its not like I'm planning on playing online.

Just to think, the most annoying thing about gaming used to be that occasionally you had to blow inside a cartridge to make it work. Those were the days...

Let's take off the rose-tinted glasses. There's a dark side of the moon on the flipside. For example, while it wasn't lukewarmly received, I really enjoyed Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, but the game was broken. Once I reached a certain stage on the game, it was a little over halfway through, I think, it would crash on launch every time. Thought the file was corrupted, so I played all the way through again...just to hit the same wall.

No updates. No patches. Anything game-breaking like that gets fixed nowadays with updates. Most minor glitches get fixed with the rolling updates. The downside to games shipping complete, with no internet, was that if something was broken, it stayed broke. With only a few exceptions where there were official update CD's for PC games that was the state of commercial gaming from the early 1970's up until the 8th gen of consoles with the Xbox One and PS4. Even in the 2000's on Steam or X360/PS3, despite going online, there was tremendously limited patching in comparison.

No joke. Phantasy star 2 I put in so many hours into. Was on the final dungeon and grinding for like 2 weeks everyday after school for a couple of hours. One day I insert the cartridge and all my saves are gone.

I don’t miss the old days but I recognize it’s not ideal for everyone.

This is why password saves were always superior. Thanks for proving my point.

But anyway, back on topic. I liked Xbox better when the division was smaller and there were less people involved. It's too early to tell but maybe in 5 years we'll see if letting Bungie go and buying up Bethesda and Activision Blizzard was a good idea or not.

That sounds like a nightmare. I don't want to go back in time because some people don't have the internet. I'd rather just focus on making the internet more reliable, faster, and spread out across the country more.
