That's an interesting question. You could always retroactively claim freebies on Games with Gold so long as you were subscribed during the month they were given away even if you didn't claim them then. That's been the key difference from PS Plus.Wonder what will happen to any longtime subscribers who haven’t downloaded their Games with Gold freebies. Will we still be able to claim them?
I'd expect they'd grandfather in those claims. It's possible they'd only honor this grandfathering for the previous consoles, when Games with Gold existed, and not the XSX. That seems unlikely, given their great enmeshment of all Xbox libraries in their bold new approach, but if so, I'd expect they'd do that so you could only play games from your Games with Gold years on the XSX so long as you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass. That would honor all past giveaways on their respective consoles, keeping every consumer's IP ownership intact, while also creating another incentive to subscribe to the Xbox Game Pass for XSX upgraders.
IMO, Microsoft is just murdering Sony in the pre-game as far as policies. The Xbox Game Pass is the best service in gaming. Consumers having the choice of going free, and playing online, or spending up for the perks of that service is the best of all worlds.
But that's all moot if they don't bring some interesting games. What they need to show today is an impressive game library, and as I've said before, they really need to start getting developers to commit to Xbox+PC exclusivity while leaving out Sony (and Nintendo). I think the theoretical argument in gaming forums is cynical. I often hear people say, "There's no point to owning an Xbox...I get everything Xbox has with a PC. The PC + PS4 is where it's at." Sure, that's true, but let's be real....that's a PC Gamer's perspective. Most console gamers want nothing to do with a PC. The Xbox isn't competing against the PC. It's competing against the Playstation.
