Time will tell. Looks like Sony will have to consider a bigger loss per console sold to pay for more powerful hardware for long-term viability on the gaming market.

Unfortunately they haven't got time to rectify it, stuff like this is nearly set in stone over a year out, if they want to change things then thats another year-18month delay at least.

I have to wonder if MS is being affected by this as well. It seems weird to me that this would only affect Sony but not MS. Did they say what part specifically is causing this?

Both consoles are gonna eat a loss to begin with, the PS4 didn't make a profit on its own as a console for the first 6 months or so unless you bought a game or PS plus subscription with. With the BOM and then all the other bits involved y(labour, packaging etc) probably looking at least a 30dollar loss with the PS5 and 50 dollars minimum for the Xbox depending on the price point.

Sony shot themselves in the dick with the PS3 launch and still outsold everything but the Wii. The base is incredibly important.

They’d have to somehow screw up worse than announcing a $600 console that was difficult to program for. Could happen but as long as they deliver a cheaper, easy to use gaming platform, I can’t see how they lose their base.

This is brand loyalty, not installed base, and the PS3 wasn't that outrageous, at least not for the final consumer. It was difficult to develop for it, but it wasn't translated into anything that people could complain about. And they did take a hit in the beginning and in the middle of the generation.

But they had price drops, great games (Gran Turismo and Last of Us come to mind) to help, and could catch the X360.

I just read that the Series X is going to have a thing called "Smart Delivery" In short, if you buy one version of an Xbox game that supports Smart Delivery, you'll always have access to the best version of that game no matter which hardware you're playing it on.

So if you buy Halo Infinite on Xbox One, then later play it on Xbox Series X, your one-time purchase gets you the versions of the game optimized for both Xbox consoles.

From the consumer’s perspective that’s a great policy. I would love it if all company’s adopted that policy, but I doubt it.

Im talking about more recently. It’ll be good for business. They acquired ninja studios and few others not too long ago. They haven’t released anything from them. Also Sea of Thieves is fun as fuck.

I know, my point is that them buying up developers hasn’t produced much of anything. I don’t see why we should expect different.

It’s a smart tactic. There’s no point in releasing games for the one while this launch is right around the corner. You don’t honestly think these studios are just sitting there doing nothing. While the games they will launch will be available on the one for a bit, it’ll bring a lot of attention to the one x.

I don’t think they’re doing nothing. Again, my point is that buying up studios isn’t any guarantee of actual quality games.

They need to turn it around. When 360 and PS3 came out and I decided to get one you know what made me pull the trigger on 360? Games. I wanted Gears of War and I wanted Mass Effect.

Unfortunately MS hasn't been able to bring new exciting games like that this gen and we all lose out as gamers because of it. No one wants Gears of war 55 and Halo 102. Give those series a break and let those great studios bring something new to the table. I hope they turn things around this gen. Would be so great to have both Sony and Xbox releasing quality AAA games. Could you imagine if MS was releasing as many quality games this gen as Sony did?
