What’s the general thought as to how Microsoft “won” the 360/PS3 generation? Was it primarily just because they had about a year head start on Sony?
Head start, Sony bungled the price which drove people away and multi plats were usually better on the 360 because of the PS3’s weird architecture. All pretty major factors.

Sony finished ahead but they both lost that generation in terms of sales to the Wii.

Yea I had a 360. PS3 was just not doing it for me. I was really into Mass Effect and Gears at the time also so PS3 was pretty much not even a thought. Worked out great for me though because I got PS4 this gen and go to play pretty much everything I missed.

That’s another thing, their franchises weren’t so washed up and tired. They had stuff you actually really wanted to play on the 360. I had one just for Dead Rising, practically. I got two red rings though and got a PS3 Slim which I still have to this day.

Yep by the time I beat Gears 3 I was done with Gears period. MS has a serious issue with not letting a series take a break. Except for Fable and guess what? I'd love a Fable game right now. It's one series I've been waiting for them to bring back for a long time.

2 things:

Wii won that generation

MS sold a bunch of extra 360s due to the RROD scandal. I know I had to send mine back twice and the third time it went out I bought a new console..

and then I had to send that one back..

I used to dismiss the idea that people who had a 360 RROD woudl go out an dbuy another one. I didn't think about it though but a lot of people probably had a good sized library. So they are left with the choice of go with Sony and replace all your games (and possibly leave your friends behind) or get another xbox. Plus with PS3 being 600 probably cheaper to just replace xbox.

And that's why I didn't bother with the xbone...

May get a PS5 if it has good backwards compatibility. There are a few ps4 games I haven't played yet that I don't wanna get a pro for..

Then again I have gaming PC that's backwards compatible with all the games.. I play minesweeper in 4K now.. take that console peasants!!!

I refuse to believe that a pc powerful enough to run Minesweeper in 4k exists.

They didn't "win" that generation. PS3 edged it out and the Wii beat both of 'em by almost 15 million.
The PS3 was $500 and $600 when it launched which was ridiculous. The "unique" Cell processor frustrated developers (which is why most multiplat games were better on 360). And earlier exclusives (like Lair and Haze) ended up being disappointing.
Sony turned things around when they dropped the price to $300 in 09 (also dropping that damn Spiderman font and redesigning the sytem) along with finally having a true killer app (Uncharted 2).

They really dropped the ball with exclusives this generation. Not only that but nearly all first party games are also on PC. Horizon is the only PS4 exclusive I can think of that's out or coming out on PC.

They used to come out swinging back in the 16-32 bit days, and get them unit movers out there as quickly as possible. Hasn't been the case for a while. Most systems come in like a lamb now. Nintendo still lives by the mantra of big launch lineups though. They've usually got one or two of their heavies ready to go at launch. However, I also find Nintendo to really only care about year one, as after that initial wave of great games, they usually fall right the fuck off, albeit while still selling systems. I couldn't even tell you about a significant Switch game that has come out since that first year. They've got good media selling it though. The Switch critics will cream their pants at any old indie port.

Astral Chain in 2019.

Best game on switch imo.

Detroit: Become Human (all the David Cage games I think), Journey, and Death Stranding just off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure there's some that I am forgetting about; I think the Demon's Souls remake is rumored to be coming to pc.

To be fair, for Horizon, that one took 3 years before coming to PC. Detroit is only coming out on Epic Games, which Sony is an investor in.

It is not quite the same as games being simultaenously released on PC and Xbox.

Or in the Series X's case, released on the Series X, the One, and PC at the same time.

Horizon taking 3 years isn't indicative of some policy though. Horizon is releasing relatively soon after the other games on the list. As in, once Sony started allowing previous exclusives on PC other games followed relatively quickly. Death Stranding didn't even take an entire year. Horizon and Death Stranding are both on Steam, so I don't think Sony being an investor in Epic has anything to do with it.

I don't expect simultaneous releases, but it's not uncommon to wait 6 months to a year for PC port anyway. Most Rockstar and Square games take about that long. I'm no longer convinced that I need to get a PS5.

Probably don't if you don't care about playing games when they are released.

Gamerpass sucks. I was playing a game and then 2 months later it wasn’t part of it. I couldn’t finish the game.

Games didn’t look impressive. PS5 fo sho.
Gamepass sucks because you didn't finish a game which had likely been on the service for 6+ months..

Sound reasoning.
