Xbox Official Xbox thread

How does this help Microsoft? I doubt people will drop their current ecosystem to buy a 300 to 500 dollar box and on top of that pay 200 a year to play one game. Won’t they just fork out the 70 per year instead and they own the game too that way. Seems bizarre. Wish they got rid of GamePass , seems really bad for the industry by devaluing everything

Well it helps them by not looking like they are back tracking on GP. Since like December of last year it's just been a constant flow of negative news about Xbox. The last thing they need to do is further add to the pile by not putting COD on GP. It would just be a huge message to everyone that not only is GP not working but it's going so bad they are already having to back track on their statements. This at least makes it look like they are still committed to it regardless of how shacky things might be in the background. They committed to GP and they really have no choice but to do this. They'll just have to hope the sales on the other systems make up for it.

I do wonder if this will be the first time it doesn't end up as the best selling game of the year because of it (with no Hogwarts or GTA that is). I doubt the sales are hurt that bad but you never know.

I had the fortunate scenario of being downwind from this rumor since i was consumed with work since mid last week. This rumor was started by some random social media user that just resurfaced the 2015(?) attempted acquisition of Valve by Microsoft. That got picked up by the algorithm an proceeded to spread like wildfire across platforms.

Biggest farcical event of this rumor is the 16 billion dollar valuation price of Valve. During the BLM protests Valve refused to make a corporate statement. So instead they gave each employee 50K to donate to a charity of their personal choosing(thats 100 million dollars). Not to mention every year for two weeks each Valve employee along with their extended family get a fully paid vacation to Hawaii. During initial quarantine one Valve employee got bored an evaluated the company value per employee. They discovered they dwarfed Apple whose worth 2.9 trillion with 164K employees; which works out to 17 million per employee.
Alright, thanks for the background. Definitely wouldn't put it past MS to try to acquire them but they are doing just fine without MS...

Decade ago both companies attitude towards one another was apocalyptic. When Phil Spencer replaced Holtman the business relationship slowly became cordial to what it is today.

That trust Spencer help build is now in question. For Spencers time as CEO appears to be coming to an end.

Any suggestions for an external hard drive for my Series S? The built in storage is not cutting it.

If you're going for older games (Xbox, 360, ONE) then any external hard drive would be ok. If you're talking this generation of games, they won't even install on those, so you'd need one of the newer drives.

"
  1. Seagate Xbox Storage Expansion Card: This is the top choice for seamless integration with the Xbox Series X. It offers fast speeds and larger storage options. Keep in mind that it’s on the pricier side, but it’s a worthwhile investment.
  2. Toshiba Canvio Basics: If you’re budget-conscious, the Toshiba Canvio Basics hard drive provides a big storage upgrade for less1.
  3. WD Black C50: While it maxes out at 1TB, the WD Black C50 provides excellent value if you’re after a modest storage boost2.
  4. Seagate FireCuda Gaming Hard Drive: If you prefer an external SSD, the WD Black P40 is impressively fast and perfect for storing and running previous-gen titles3.
Remember that the Xbox Series X’s operating system takes up some space, so the effective storage may be less than the advertised capacity. Choose the option that best fits your needs and budget! 🎮🚀45."

The Series S has three USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A ports, but unfortunately, it only supports playing the games directly from external drives if the games are Xbox One games, and not optimized next gen versions for the Series S/X (only the Seagate Expansion card and WD Card C50 mentioned above designed specifically for the Xbox support that). What this means is paying more for external SSDs like the Firecuda won't make any difference to game performance unless you're really into retro gaming. The only other time it will matter is if you move games back and forth between the internal drive and external drive. SSDs with transfer them faster if you do this frequently, and you are moving large game files.

The Series S USB ports also offer power delivery; meaning power will be delivered to the external drive from the port itself, and so you'll probably prefer the "Portable" form factor since it won't require an additional cord to power the external drive. That's more clutter, and takes up another electrical outlet.

This link shows you in descending order the best bang-for-your-buck Portable HDDs:
And here is SSDs:

Cheapest right now:
  • HDD: $101 [$25 per TB] = 4TB Seagate Backup Portable (~140 MB/s)
  • SSD: $161 [$80 per TB] = 2TB Crucial X8 (~970 MB/s)

Some of these games look good, if not unique, which is a good thing. MS doubling down on Game Pass is an exceptional value for me.

The gameplay for Indiana Jones game looks off to me...too floaty looking.

This avowed gameplay better than last showing, and Atom fall looks interesting.

We're about 25 games in and half of them have female protagonists. The War Room is going to be livid.

Game Pass is going to eat good the next two years. Some of these look good. As for Indy, I wish they went over the shoulder third person, but the humor looks on point.

And Gears 6: E-Day. Prequel. I'm in, like always. I was playing Gears 5 online last night. Some old habits die hard.

Overall, a very promising showcase. Avowed looks like a Skyrim mod with less character customization, and Fable looks hilarious. The new Dark game will probably drop in 2028 on Xbox Series Y or some shit, lol.

I really liked what I saw! The one game (I'm forgetting the name), with the talking mudcat (catfish) reminded me of back home!

Don't judge me.

State of Decay 3 had some gameplay mixed in with the trailer and I love that series. Overall, I give this showcase an A.

Forgot those, my mistake. One thing I liked about this showcase is that they showed so many different types of games and demonstrated that their devs are willing to 'try some wrong.'. We usually only get typical releases. These games are so expensive that it's a huge risk and could cause your studio shutting down, but I respect the thought process behind it.
