Xbox Official Xbox Series X thread

Man, I'm REALLY digging South of Midnight.

SO there are rumors going around that there will in fact be another Xbox, even though Microsoft Game Studios is effectively a third party publisher now. Kinda reminds me of the SNK/Neo Geo situation, where I was able to play Samurai Shodown on SNES.

Any takers on what the next console will be like?

  1. Technologically on par with a high end PC
  2. Technologically on par with a PS6
  3. A handheld/console hybrid with Series S power levels
  4. An Xbox branded PC
  5. A streaming device
  6. There will be no new Xbox
I'm going with 5- something like a fire stick that will hold your account information and allows you to bring your library to anything with an HDMI or USB port.

I'm thinking something like this

I think it could be 2, 3 or 5 or perhaps a combination of all three where if a person wants a piece of relatively powerful hardware they can buy one for $500+ but if they just want some kind of streaming stick thing for like $50-70 that option would be available to them as well. As for a handheld device, I could see them trying to do something like that too, though I’m not sure if would be purely handheld vs a hybrid approach similar to a Switch.

I think it's gotta be 1 or 2.

If Xbox does a handheld, it'll be able to connect to a TV and you can play it via xbox controller on big screen. Just my 2 cents there.

Hmm based on the comments I have heard, I actually think 1 and 2 are the least likely.

But you never know

Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he's "not trying to move [PS5 and PC players] all over to Xbox anymore", acknowledging that players are "all so invested in where our games are", all he wants to do now is "allow more people to play" Xbox games on other systems.

This is why I think option 6 "no more xbox" is not that unrealistic. They are not looking to compete directly.

From that same article:
That doesn't mean Xbox is about to give up its hardware endeavours, however.

"Obviously we make more on our own platform, it's one of the reasons that investing in our own platform is important," he added.
They get 30% of every purchase made on their platform, and 100% for their own software. They are not going to give that up. And their subscription model is based on having their own platform. They're not giving that up, either. I would bet that they launch a two tiered console again, just like this generation.

I saw that, have heard the same and I get your logic....

BUT
They've said lots of things before that they ultimately backtracked on

"It's only 4 games" ring a bell?

I do think they will release new hardware but I don't rule out the possibility that they drop it also. There's a famous story about a whole new surface device that was built and was going to be released and at the last second they canceled it. Someone was able to get one of the laptops through an employee who worked at the warehouse and MS was pissed. They've also gone back and forth this whole gen on their strategy. First the new games were going to all be exclusive. We saw emails from Phil saying as much. Then they changed their mind and it was only four games, now it's everything (which I always knew it would be).

I just think next gen hardware is going to drop even lower and I guess the real question is when is it to low? They are at @30 million now and I suspect they will sell under that next gen. Is that to low or is it enough to stay in the game?
