Has it been confirmed for this holiday? I know that’s what they were hoping.
As far as I know that has always been the plan.

I agree with what you have said here.. I'll also add there's a lot more overlap between PC and consoles these days.. and PCs can already do the stuff that this "next gen" is promising.Something tells me this may very well be the first new console generation where the difference between the last (in terms of visuals) is barely, if at all perceivable.
Literally nothing I'm seeing in the official reveal screams to me "This is the future!" or makes me go, "Wow, that is stunning. I can't imagine the PS4 or Xbox One ever being able to pull that off."
I understand of course that there's so much more to gaming than graphics (shit, I still play the original DOOM games like crazy), but to see such a small step up in visuals is incredibly disappointing to me.
Think back to what it was like going from the Sega Genesis and SNES into the 3D worlds of PS1/N64. Or the incredible leap after that to the Dreamcast/PS2 (and eventually Xbox). Or the giant step up to the PS3/360, with loads of fancy shaders and effects that were never seen on the older consoles. I feel the PS4/Xbox One was a much smaller improvement, but it was still noticeable--you could definitely look at a large percentage of those games and realize the last generation couldn't handle them unless they were severely dumbed down.
I'm just not seeing that here with the Xbox Series X. Yeah, sure, it's going to have a much higher resolution. And there will of course be ray-tracing here and there (and probably in most titles by the end of its lifespan). But that alone just isn't enough to get me giddy like with most of the previous console generations.
The Xbox Series X is already better value than the PS5 – here’s why
Interesting article that distills this to four points. The fourth was the one new to my eyes:
- First Party Microsoft games (which are all their full exclusives now) are included with Xbox Game Pass
- 100% Backwards compatibility with Xbox One; hundreds of Xbox 360 and Xbox titles will also backwards-compatible with automatic framerate & resolution upgrades
- Xbox One controller compatibility
- Xbox Smart Delivery: any game you buy on the Xbox One you will immediately also own on the Xbox Series X. This mirrors their "Play Anywhere" policy for Xbox One and PC, where any game from that list you purchase at the Microsoft or Xbox store you immediately own on the other platform, and all gameplay progress is sync'd between both platforms in the cloud.
In addition to that, Phil Spencer has already confirmed the Xbox Series X will be no more than $499, and it's already the far more powerful of the two machines (PS5 or Xbox):
Direct comparison of PS5 and Xbox Series X specs, for anyone interested.
The real story here is Xbox Game Pass, the best damn service in gaming, and how somewhat sneakily Microsoft has already made the service the crux of the upcoming console's appeal. For $14.99/mo, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you get:
- Xbox Live Gold Membership (Online Access & "Free Games with Gold")
- Access to both Xbox & PC Game Pass libraries (currently 192 titles for PC & 238 titles for Xbox One with another 10 upcoming for the latter)
- Access to all Xbox exclusives which are automatically made part of the above libraries
- Automatic Multiplatform Ownership of Games (Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and even the PC for titles shared between the two that are also on the "Play Anywhere" list; buy a game once, you have it on all three platforms)
- 20% discount on Game Pass titles (for permanent ownership)
- 10% Discount on DLC or Microtransaction content for all Game Pass titles
- Project xCloud, Microsoft's upcoming Cloud gaming service, which lets you play any titles you own on the go via other devices like your smartphone; this will include every Game Pass title if you're subscribed
And still they will lose if they don't have any great first party games. I love all these decisions but it means nothing if they don't bring the games. I know for a fact I'll be buying a PS5 for Spiderman, Horizon 2 and Demon's Souls.
I'm hoping that the July event will have some good titles. Halo isn't enough to get be on board.
Another link about the leak:Tom's Hardware said:Microsoft could have another next-gen console up its sleeve in the form of the Xbox Series S, which has gone under the Lockhart codename in recent leaks and rumors. While the Xbox Series X will have the limelight, the rumored but far from confirmed Lockhart console could be a cheaper alternative for people who are perhaps not keen on dropping some $400 or more on a dedicated gaming machine.
A recent application to the US Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the term "Xbox Series" would suggest that there's more than one next-generation Xbox planned. Whether this is simply a digital version of the Xbox Series X or indeed the cutdown Xbox Lockhart wasn't clear.
Xbox Series S price
All of the rumors so far point toward Xbox Series S being a cheaper sibling to the Xbox Series X. We don’t yet know the price of the latter, but it’s expected to be somewhere around the $400 mark.
If Xbox Lockhart is indeed in the works, we’d expect it to cost somewhere around the $250 mark, given it’ll be a cutdown version of the Xbox Series X. But according to a reasonably reliable tech tipster going by the name of eastmen on the Beyond3D forums the all-digital Xbox will be half the price of the Xbox Series X.
“Last I heard [it’ll] be half the price of the XSX [Xbox Series X] and last I heard MS [Microsoft] were prepared for a $400 XSX. I am not sure what the final price will be,” said eastmen referring to claimed tips from a Microsoft insider. “I think if Sony is $500/$600 MS may try to go in at $200/$400/$500 but we will see.”
I really don’t like the dimensions of the Series X. It just doesn’t work with my set up at all. I probably wasn’t going to get the series X and would more likely have Just gone PS5 but the inability to fit an X anywhere in my entertainment unit makes going for an X difficult.
Here’s a pic of my entertainment unit from when I first put it together in 2018. Currently I have below the tv in those slots from left to right my PS4, my tv box/PVR (whatever it’s called) and my Xbone S. No good spot to put a Series X if I bought one. The side shelves are filled with books, blurays and board games. If I tried to stick it in the side shelves i would have to cut a hole for cables to go in and out, and it just wouldn’t look nice.

Even if Playstaion has a handful of good exclusives it's not like there won't be anything to play. There Are plenty of games like Resident Evil, Far Cry, GTA, Tomb Raider, RDR, The Whitcher, Skyrim, etc... that are cross platform.
I would rather be able to have access to 260 plus games right off the bat with game pass vs being able to play spider man. If anything I would rather get a Switch and be able to play the Nintendo exclusives and have an Xbox to play AAA titles.
Oof, that looks ridiculous. The form factor on the One X is perfect. This thing is a behemoth.
honestly the shelves you have do not looks ideal for cooling purposes. I wouldn’t want to stick my console in there.
They’re not great to be honest. I know for some games my PS4 runs really loud and hot, in particular Doom 2016 and Black Ops 4. Doom Eternal and the new Modern Warfare aren’t as bad for some reason, but for the other two I mentioned I sometimes worry my PS4 is going to burst into flames.
Seems like you should just go pc gamer honestly. You get all the triple aaa titles, some Sony exclusives, and even stuff Xbox doesn’t get like Nioh, persona, etc. Plus access to thousands of games right off the bat.
I would like to build a PC someday as the process sounds fun and I would get top of the line graphics. I'm afraid I would spend more time tinkering with it than actually playing it though. Not that it would be necessary, but that's just the way I am with that kind of stuff.
I have a custom bar top arcade for emulators that runs Retro Arch off of a Raspberry pie, and a Decent enough laptop to run Dolphin in case I need to get a Nintendo fix. I really like sports games (which lacks PC titles) too and NHL is a must for me which is something the PC doesn't offer these days. I'm happy with Xbox and it looks like the series x is going to be a beast, but I 100% get where you are coming from.
