Official Women's Division Discussion #27

Here's my hopes and expectations, with zero actual knowledge & analysis as usual:

-Goldy should pick up the victory
-skipping Eubanks, hoping for the other fighter
-Maverick, as violently as humanly possible

I’ve never been high on Maverick or Barber, never liked them at all, TBQH. For some reason, everyone I see everywhere picking Maverick has me starting to cheer for Barber. Can’t help being a contrarian.

I’d say it was Buys vs Ruiz, but Goldy vs Belbita is in competition.

I think Ruiz would comfortably beat Goldy and Belbita.
In fact I now have a previously unknown burning desire to see Ruiz vs Goldy. Whether Goldy wins or loses, make it happen, Mick! (we know you're out there ;) ).

Belbiţă / Goldy: I think Belpizza is one of teh hawtest fighters in the UFC, for what that's worth. I also like her history of King Reina gimmick infrengegment.
Goldy apparently has a very popular onlyfans herself and seems a big hit with the r/mmababes simps, I kinda get it but then again she's weirdly bloated looking(I wonder why...) and has an awful tattoo of a dirty hand on her midriff which totally ruins any looks she may have, that thing seriously makes me wanna retch, why do people do stuff like that to themselves?
anyway enough about looks - I think Belbita seems an OK striker, although we haven't seen much of it since a mild breeze will quickly take her down. Roidy seems stiff and low output, unsure about her grappling but it won't take much if she's been training some. I'm picking Belbita by being a more dynamic striker and hopefully being able to stay on her feet for once.
Belbita DEC

Eubanks/Reed: Eubanks by easy win that may or may not be as easy as it should be because she can be kinda meh a lot of the time.
Eubanks SUB rd 2

Barber/Maverick: I think this is a good fight, it's almost like a mirror match, I know some people wonder why thy're fighting at this stage of their career (including Maverick who said as much) but I think it's a good idea, can always fight again later, obv need more prospects vs tired vets fights though (one of these coulda been fighting Eye instead). I think Barber is being underrated now, everyone laughing at her in the Grasso fight, overlooks she won the 3rd and nearly the 2nd, with a few differences it could have been hers. Maverick is pretty 'rough' in form and decisonmaking herself. Plus I've recently entrapped myself into comparing Barber positively with Lennox Lewis, how's Maverick going to deal with a Pugilist Specialist, HUH? Finally, everyone wanting Barber to die activates my hipster and makes me want to pick her more. But Leto already just said that, so now I don't know what to do anymore.
<Oku01> Barber DEC

Ladd/Chiasson: this was also an exciting one that seemed to promise a finish, oh well... I was picking Ladd but could well see Chiasson punching her face a-la a crappier version of GDR as bum-knee Ladd waddles around with no ed mooment...

...and don't forget that next week, all being well, we finally have the return of the real, undefeated FW champ to look forward to!

They're pretty similar fighters to me, both of them rely heavily on strength & aggression to win fights and they're also pretty lacking in defence, technique, and setups. I was watching Maverick's fight against Jojua where she spent the entire fight blocking punches with her face against someone who isn't even a good striker.

I expect the fight against Barber to be messy with lots of sloppy striking & grappling. Either that or they both punch air for 15 minutes. Hard to pick a winner, but I'd lean towards Barber since she's had more experience, albeit on the losing side, against better opponents.

I think Miranda will surprise Barber with her physical strength and maybe win inside the distance.

Reed is an interesting character - water polo player, gym owner, Army officer - and it say's something about the lack of imagination of the mma media that this has escaped their notice during fight week. Surely she's too small to worry Eubanks though, unless she has a cunning plan.

Goldy has better wins on her record than Belbita, so I'll reluctantly pick her.

Glad to see you're still loyal to our true tsarina Nikita Montanova.

Hang on have they really gone and put Buys on next week's main card?

I just couldn’t stand Invicta making a big deal of Maverick and constantly gushing over her, just because she was from Missouri and was one of the few fighters who actually put literal butts in the seats for them. Seems that hype has followed her to the UFC. It’s like, are we talking about the girl who’s 1-1 with Deanna Bennett?

Actually saw someone on Twitter this morning cheering for Maverick because “she’s the only flyweight with any hope at all of beating Valentina” <45>

Am I seeing things differently than most people? I saw that fight 2 - 1 Maycee and thought it was a decent fight. Everyone in the PBP thread hated the fight and scored it for Mav. I had it 1 - 1 going into the 3rd and gave Maycee the 3rd.

Hm, Belbiţă seemed neat.

After seeing Herb Dean in the cage, it was obvious Maverick needed a finish to win. Glad the UFC decided to give her one judge though. "Win" doesn't make Barber any nearer to redemption for the Roxy fight shenanigans.

Yes. Up until the takedown at the end of round 2 it was fairly even, but Maverick sealed the round with the takedown, control, sub attempts, and ground strikes. I was thinking Herb Dean would do an insta-stoppage as soon as Barber got a flurry going, but it turns out that the judges were the ones who were bought.

Overall, I do have to say my prediction wasn't too far off. Lots of air punching in the first, then it turned into a high paced sloppy fight during the 2nd. Maverick also blocked a bunch of punches with her face once Barber decided to step into range, and she doesn't have Grasso's composure or defence. Miranda won clearly in my eyes, but neither fighter is ready for the good fighters in their division.

I thought it was an OK fight, I wouldn't pay any heed to what the PBP thinks about it because they hate on every WMMA fight and hate on everything female fighters do.

I had Maverick winning 2-1 and I had £25 (and 0.01 btc!) on Maycee

I thought Maycee was winning rd 2 until Maverick scored the TD and back take at the end of the round, but there are some cases where the judges randomly ignore 'positional grappling' (something something 'new rules') so maybe that had something to do with it...

...or maybe it was just Sal D'Tomato being Sal D'Tomato.

For round two I had it exactly like you but just did not think the last takedown was enough to steal the round. It was very close though. Like if it went that way for a few more second I would have given it to Mav.

No way Barber won that fight, she only won round 3 with her typical bully shit, after she ran away for the entirety of round 1. No one ever does anything about it, which is why judges remain incompetent. Robbed fighters should gather all the wealthy, influential Karens they can find, and have them solve this issue. "Don't leave it to the judges" wouldn't be such a real thing, if most judges were qualified for their positions.

Also, I hope they can reschedule Ladd vs Chiasson, but at Featherweight. Ladd was 160lbs in the cage when she fought GDR, Chiasson is also on the bigger side of bantamweights. Just don't cut that much weight, and fight at 145 ladies.

Thoughts.

Velveeta got the job done, unanimous decision all three rounds.

Sarje got the ko.

Barber got the split. I thought it was very easy to score. 29-28 Maverick. As did a few others lol.

OK, I watched the second round again and I have to admit. The striking was a lot closer than I thought on 1st viewing. It was so close that the 50 second after the takedown at the end of the round would be enough to put Miranda over the top.

I now have to deal with the fact that I would have been the bad judge for this fight.
