Official Women's Division Discussion #27

The most interesting part of the Kayla fight was when Cindy for a second reversed Kayla and we was about to see how Kayla does from off her back until Kayla said I don't like this position so I will hulk reverse your reverse and end up back on top. That was the Judo Kayla version of Derrick Lewis and his just get up. It was for a split second but that was the 1st time I can remember Kayla's opponent being in a dominant position on her.

The second most interesting part was the brief few seconds of Kayla trying to strike and her kicks looked very bad. I don't think she liked the feeling of doing things she knows she is not good at so she went right into her normal takedown into smash mode.

Hopefully she can at least have the striking defense to implement her game plan should her and Nunes fight down the line.

Why is Eye fighting Maia, why is Barber fighting Maverick .... dumb matchmaking, shake things up a bit. These conservative, ranking obsessed matchups are detrimental to the women's game.

Starting to agree with the heavies about Eye, why on earth put her on a big ppv card?

Mmath? Really?

Plus, the Dern who fought Virna looked much improved from the one that fought Ribas... and the virna we saw fighting Dern was already a better version of the Invicta Virna but the Virna that fought Murata was looked much improved from the already improved version that fought Dern.

I honestly think that Dern jumped the gun taking the fight with Amanda 4 months after giving birth... that sounded pretty bonkers to me at the time.

On the ground Virna will be fine even if taken down, on the striking side, if we were talking a year ago, I would be pretty confident that Amanda would have a big upper hand, but now I dont think that they are that far apart... That added to the fact that Amanda was just KOd twice in her last bout also helps Virna's case.

Yes Ribas got ktfo in her last one. That was brutal. Marina smashed her with the elbow and then with punches. Consider that Rodriguez is a very good striker who had a four inch height advantage on Ribas. In this one Ribas is listed as one inch taller than Virna. The last fight Virna won she had the height advantage.

I don't see Virna straight up knocking Amanda out. To me in this fight a lot depends on whether and how Ribas has improved her striking defense & foot work / movement. And on Amanda's confidence. Virna's confidence is obviously very high. She has increasingly looked better in every fight - much better than when we first saw her.

Everyone places different emphasis that Ribas beat Dern and Dern beat Jandiroba. I agree it's a bit mmath yet I don't dismiss it entirely and see it as a factor that's worth consideration. This one's a great match up. We'll learn more about each fighter. For me and for now it's close to 50-50, with perhaps a slight edge to Virna because she has become a more complete fighter. Look forward to seeing both of them back in action.

Yeah agree Eye vs. Maia has the potential to be what many call dull. Though at least it's the early prelims & free on espn+. I'm rooting for Maia.

Yana vs. Irene should be exciting. For now that's on the 'main card' or paid portion of the ppv. Who knows how they may change everything around after weigh ins, drop outs etc.

As far as fights that many complain about - I don't much bother. Haters gonna hate. I like watching all kinds of fights & will watch them both.

Weekend picks.

Maia over Eye by arm bar, round 2. Rooting for Maia as well.

Yana over Irene by tko, ground & pound, round 3. I've gone back & forth with this one for a while. When it was first announced I thought oh Irene's got this. But after viewing her fight vs. Holm I think it exposed a lot of weaknesses and that Yana & her team have studied carefully. Yana tends to start slow but I think she'll be advised to start faster. I like her sturdiness and think her training at ATT has helped her comfortability and decision-making in the octagon. As in, she's less stiff than she used to appear. Irene certainly has the ability to win - and even to get a tko via striking. There should be a lotta blood. Always liked Aldana a lot as fighter & person. There's a lot at stake for both fighters. Looking for a fun exciting scrap.

And on Amanda's confidence.

This is where I think the KO in the previous fight will play a big part. Not necessarily confidence in specific, but where her head is and how she will deal with adversity in the standup when/if it happens.

Losing by KO is a mindfuck for alot of fighters. And her only losses be by KO can certainly play a factor.

Yeah, interested in seeing how Ribas may bounce back from that brutal ko in her previous fight. And this weekend in how Aldana returns from Holly Holm's domination of her.

I've got Maia by decision. If there's a finish, then the most likely result would be a Maia submission, but she loves to box and so does Eye, they're gonna have a mostly stand up fight, me thinks.

I've got Kunitskaya by decision as well. Yana used to strike very well in the past, but after the Cyborg fight she's been avoiding stand up fights. The only time she was FORCED to stand up, was with Renau and she looked scared of getting hit. Every win post-Cyborg, has been a decision, where she mostly controls opponents against the cage because she's so physically strong. I don't think Aldana/Kunitskaya will be a striking match, much less after Irene lands something significant. Yana will run for the clinch, and keep Irene there for a safe and boring win.

Trying to think of a weaker matchup than Belbita vs Goldy, Dobson vs Beck perhaps ...... no, I give up.

Btw I'm not saying Eye vs Maia is a bad fight, just a pointless one .... I'm taking Maia to win, Aldana too.

Aldana missed weight. Watch people try to use this to justify featherweight

Nakai deserves to get another chance but she won't since the UFC and Dana doesn't give a fuck about the Asian market unless you are Chinese. Nakai should change her last name to Wong and maybe Dana could get tricked into signing her
