Official Women's Division Discussion #27

Sorry. I tried to warn her but she just couldn't keep her hands off me.

Great fight from the ladies Michelle showing her toughness, but she only put her wrestling shoes on in the 4th, and lost all the other rounds. Rodriguez always exciting in the standup, but her tdd and fighting off her back showed again.

I'm still hoping for Rodriguez vs jj next. Other interesting matches Adrade or Zhang.

Later rounds o fWaterson vs. Rodriguez were fun. A pity Waterson could not really get anything done in the first three, and she seemed so damn small vs. the gigantic opponent. Rodriguez is good, but for some reason I cannot just enjoy her style at all most of the time, which is super odd for a striker type. But I think feel the same about a lot of "thai" based fighters, I think. Just something about that particular discipline that feels dull as heck to me.

Also the couple of good kicks gave Waterson round 5 easy in my books. Easy 3-2 for Roriguez nonetheless, cause Waterson did mostly nothing in 1-3 and only turned it up once Rodriquez had already won :(

Questionable fight smarts from Waterson, if you know your opponent has a weak ground game and you just lost a round of standup, why would you wait until round 4 before even attempting a takedown? Hello? Marina also has a ton of work to do, she's still completely lost on the ground, and worse yet, I've never seen anyone walk straight into that many Waterson side kicks. She kept trying to use her punches against Michelle while eating kicks everywhere on the way in. She could've out-ranged Waterson badly if she used her own kicks, and when she did kick she had a lot of success, but it seems like she fell in love with her hands after the Ribas KO.

Personal thoughts. Marina loses to everyone ahead of her in the rankings with the possible exception of Xiaonan. She doesn't have the speed, technical skills, or fight smarts to beat them. Rose, Weili, and Joanna will punish her badly in the standup, and Carla & Dern will put her on her back and either blanket or finish her. Waterson remains a good benchmark for fighters with title hopes. Top fighters like Rose & Joanna go right through her without much trouble, fighters a level down from that will struggle even if they win.

Enjoyed the main event. Marina and Michelle displayed toughness and heart in an entertaining fight!

As a Waterson fan there was a sad air of inevitability watching rounds 1, 2 and 3 slip away. She missed several opportunities for takedown attempts. Happy she hung in there and made it a scrap in the final two rounds. Michelle's up kick to the jawbone of Marina was nasty. Marina gamely tried attacking and Michelle countered with a side kick to the stomach that caused Marina to double over in pain. Frustrating seeing Michelle back off. If she'd gone super loco aggressive she may have created an opportunity for a finish.

Impressed by Rod's combos. She rattles them off right quick. She hits hard and her knees in the clinch are strong. Also her octagon control. She was superb at dictating the fight's pacing, positioning etc. Her wrestling & grappling need improvement. On the ground she didn't move quickly to better positions. I think she'll improve as has a good work ethic and attitude. I like her fighting style.

I'm happy Michelle scrapped and was able to exhibit her unique talents and great sportsmanship. Post fight, raising Marina's arm and showing that truly respectful joyous warrior spirit. Loved how Marina returned it in kind. I hope Marina's jaw recovers perfectly. Look forward to seeing what she can do moving up in the division.

You really think she's going to make a real improvement here? This weakness has been on display since Markos 10-8 her in her ufc debut, and it looked the same 7 fights and 3 years later vs Michelle.
Markos, Calvillo, Esparza, Ribas and waterson she just gave up rounds on her back too.

Have we heard anything about what is gonna happen to the Invicta library? Will they stay on Fight Pass (for the time being, or for good)? Move to some new platform? Vanish forever without a trace cause of some weird contractual wording, spite and:

Two tv spots are running on AXS using old footage. Also judging by what Anthem is doing with Impact Wrestling on Thursday night, (new episode at 8p, a 1 hour "Best Of", and re-airing of the 8p broadcast) Friday might be Invicta night. I don't see Anthem buying Invicta and not securing the fight library from the UFC.

EDIT:
Found one of the TV spots

Tellyvision stuff never sounds promising in 2020s, hopefully there will be an easy and user-friendly on-demand access to the old Invicta events.
