Official Women's Division Discussion #27

Any particular reason for the scarcity of 145 pounders, there must be plenty of big athletic girls playing other sports, rugby for example.

My guess is that martial arts require a lot of training and these larger girls never feel the need to start - for protection etc.

Invicta picks for tonight?

skipped the first bout. Don't know them well enough.

Why force the fighters who can make 135 no problem, and actually have talent, to fight heavier women with less talent? What a dumb idea. People need to just get over featherweight a,ready

Because they're not making weight no problem. Almost every ufc bw has missed weight. And as you say most when they're fighting at 145 they do well so what is the problem with women not cutting as much weight and fighting bigger, healthier and stronger?
Just to have a smaller talent pool and more ladies cut because they're not hitting 136?

Bellator is doing it right not the ufc. Cat and Smith are not struggling with huge size disadvantages.

Don’t particularly want to get involved, but Dumont weighed in at 139.5 for that fight. Going onto her Instagram, the only time she successfully made weight at 135 was her pro debut in 2016. Every other fight she either missed weight or was fighting at either 145 or 140

Okay, her out of camp discipline sucks. See, I can compromise.

Because there are not that many large, athletic women. Those that do exist (at least in the US) are recruited early for other sports. Throwing for track and field, for example. At UCLA our scouts kept notes on local high school girls starting at age 14 and if they thought they might be a prospect they generally received a visit (of sorts, nothing official is allowed) by their sophomore year.

There are so many other opportunities for large, athletic young women that do not involved getting hit in the face MMA does not have enough to offer them early enough.

Weightlifting has the same issue, as many of your strongest girls wind up in sports with a shitload more to offer. Hell, one of my female throwers could power clean more than the full clean and jerk record of not only her weight class but the next one up. When asked about even trying a competition in weightlifting her response was "I need to stay focused" which was the right answer.

Besides Ladd, which top ten bantamweight misses weight consistently?

Have yoiu looked at the quality of Cat's opposition? Bottom of the barrel.

and Smith
Is 2-2, removed from the rankings, which likely means she's gone as well.

And was visibly pudgy at 145. There is no world in which someone who fought at 125 and was a small 135 lbs. fighter does not have size issues when fighting women who walk around 20lbs. heavier. That is math, no one gets an opinion.

I'm still upset that this never happened.

"Definitely, MMA is my next step" Mesquita said this in 2019, so I guess she changed her mind. I'm still bummed that she never transitioned to MMA, and at her age now it's pretty much pointless. I really wanted to see her try back when she mentioned it years ago.

I'll do the whole list for you:
Nunes, prefers her fw fights, has noticeable cardio issues in bw fights.
Pena, she been perfect at bw.
Viera, missed bw.
Holm, fights at fw.
Aldana, 2x missed bw, has had five fights at catchweight with some of her best performances.
Pennington, missed weight, also takes fw fights.
Kunitskaya, missed bw, takes fw and even lw fights before.
Ladd, you know.
McMann, perfect bw, and she left the ufc to probably fight in a different weightclass.
Chiasson, 2x missed bw, has cardio issues at BW too, takes fw fights.
Kainzad, 2x missed bw (maybe as many as 4x), takes fw fights.
Rosa, possibly missed before, takes fw fights, has had cardio issues at bw.
Lansberg, possibly missed before, takes fw fights.
Avila, perfect bw.
Dumont, NEVER made bw in the UFC or pretty much her career takes fw fights

So we have 3 women in the UFC rankings including Mcmann who might not resign, pena, and Avila on mat leave.
Unranked:
Stoliarenko, missed bw before, fights at fw.
Edwards, missed bw, fights at fw.
Pascaul, chandler, egger, Letson, Perez, j Nunes all been fighting at fw.

Again nearly EVERYONE has missed or has been fightingat fw.

At Invicta this evening, UD victories for Shauna Bannon at strawweight, Poliana Botelho at flyweight, Valesca Machado at strawweight and Kaytlin Neil at flyweight. Split decision at bantamweight with Montserrat Rendon over Brittney Cloudy. In the co-main at flyweight Ketlen Souza earned a clear UD. She moves to 12-3. Souza showed good movement, some flashy attacks, along with strong work to the body. In the main event Jillian DeCoursey scored a big upset, seizing the atomweight belt by submitting Jessica Correa Delboni via nasty RNC toward the end of round 1.
