Official Women's Division Discussion #27

Really? In my opinion it was obvious that Hirata won. She practically finished the fight twice and probably would have if Lin wasn't saved by the bell. Lin was definitely winning for more time but didn't have any big moments like Hirata did. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that One knows Hirata has star potential but I really do think she won.
Meh. Second round she really didn’t have much time with the limits, so we have no idea how it would have gone. The trash commentary made it seem worse than it was. Even company VP Rich Franklin said he didn’t think it was much.
The KD in the second round was big, but not enough to deserve the victory.
Lin landed more damage throughout the fight, and was having her way minus ~30 seconds. Even in Rizin that wouldn’t have been a win for Hirata.
I agree.
Specially considering how ONE's score works

Edit: all i can add is that she would never win that fight in Japan, since she missed weight badly
Agreed. Should have been penalized for missing weight.

Lin’s take:

Anyone know why this WMMA promotion gets no traction at all? Invicta is far from it's best days but still creates way more buzz.

I can only guess, but first, Invicta is US based, then had the Fightpass connection. Also, am I reading correctly that this was Pallas Athena's second event? How much buzz was there around Invicta for their second event?

Good question. This was a long time ago so my memory might not be 100% accurate. Back in those days I was mostly a filthy casual. The Rise of Ronda is what got me more heavily into MMA.

Those early Invicta's had to have had a good amount of buzz for me to hear about it and to actually watch it. I don't remember when they first started trying PPVs but I remember them always being overloaded with buyers where it would break the system. I will admit MMA at that time was not over saturated like it is now. So it was easier to get your foot in the door.

1. Horrible promotion. They didn’t announce the two title fights until 2 weeks out for the one, and 1 week out for the other. In general, they took forever to announce the fights. They’d rather announce fighters they sign first, then take forever to announce the fights.
2. Canadian. It shouldn’t be this way, but anything outside of The U.S. fails to gain any real traction. Deep Jewels has been around for 37 events, and has no traction outside of Japan.

I was going to promote the event more on my channel, but it just got too frustrating waiting for a finalized fight lineup, that by fight week I had given up. I ended up talking about only the Atomweight title bout, and then posting a link to FITE tv in a community post.

Thx for the for information. When I came by the results I was just surprised by how little this event was talked about in places that love WMMA. It kind of makes sense now.

most of those places/outlets are 95% or greater UFC discussion.

Isn’t this their 2nd show ever??

Whereas Invicta has been around for over a decade

I remember only hearing about it from Baszler promoting it on her fb

Tbf, that's mostly a time difference issue, as well as a language barrier, a Canadian company shouldn't have either of those issues

In the brouhaha a couple of months back about Carla 'ducking' Weili because she didn't sign a bout agreement 24 hours after beating (sorry, I mean DESTROYING) Rose or something, one comment she made I thought should have more attention - in response to a stupid question for clickbait ('how about moving up to 125 and challenging for the belt there?'), the CHAMP said she considers Valentina to be 'the GOAT of women’s MMA'.
https://www.bjpenn.com/mma-news/ufc...ith-valentina-shevchenko-that-would-be-scary/

I thought that was interesting because normally people consider their 'GOAT' to be whatever great fighter they grew up watching or was ruling when they came on the scene, and seldom someone who made a splash after they had made their own name. I guess TRUE GREATNESS knows when to recognise, though.

Viktoriya Dudakova: Blonde? Russian? Grappler? Valknut tattoo? New favorite fighter unlocked.
<YayKpop>
If she beats the Butchzillian tonight I'm going to spam her Insta with marriage proposals every day like one of those thirsty Indian dudes.

Dana's Cantenders: On the one hand ppl bash the concept when there are too many 'guy they want to sign crushes can' style bouts, rather than a competitive bout between potential prospects for the honour of making it to the UFC. In the case of women's divisions, I'm sure most people would say its just better to sign any good prospect without making a competitive Cantender Series bout.
Maybe 115 is good enough to for fighters to need to really prove it though, and here we have two very good strawweighs fighting, so that speaks well for the strawweight division right? - yes but I still don't get why not just sign them? Both these fighters are better than any other girl on this entire season, and Silva should have been signed already after her last Cantender showing where she totally dominated (but didn't quite finish). Compare that to some of the 'meh' performances that have gotten a contract this year (Cowan). If Silva loses again now are they really just gonna not sign her? And if she wins, why did they use her to cockblock another prospect they should be signing? (I think Silva is a bit too physical and polished, and Dudakova needs more experience, so Silva will most likely win, but still).

Meanwhile they just signed a different Russian woman fighter who is much less of a prospect and is coming off a boring fight in Bellasnore, without going the Cantenders route...
<{1-10}>

Also interesting to see athletic prospects from non-combat sports and how quickly they progress compared to each other: Cowan was a gymnast who has been doing MMA about 5 years, and Dudakova a swimmer who has been doing MMA about 5 years, yet Dudakova is clearly already more talented at fighting, despite gymnastics being a better base for it.

On tonight's Contender Series at 115: Victoria Dudakova (5-0-0) was awarded a UFC contract by defeating Maria Silva (8-0-0) by 29-28 UD. Underdog Dudakova fought on an injured knee that she re-injjured in round two. Waved off the doctor, came back out for round 3 and dominated. She's a good wrestler and showed a lot of grit.
