Official Women's Division Discussion #26

I noticed Tonya Evinger was removed from the ufc rankings a few days ago. Typically when people are removed between updates there's a reason besides prefomance. I was wondering if anyone here heard anything about her situation: retirement, PEDs, cut?

My guess is that her contract is over and they probably decided to not renew It.

She is only on her 3rd fight in the UFC. So she has one more fight unless she was cut.

Would anyone miss Evinger if she was cut?

She was just dominated by a lower-level 135 pounder in Lina Lansberg. Evinger is old, beaten up, and can't even be bothered to get in remotely decent shape.

Every division needs an Elvis Sinosic so that fighters making their debut or about to lose their way out of the organization can look good.

True, but you ALSO don't want to pay the Elvis Sinosic a higher rate than at least 80% of the division, including much of the top 10.

And given that Evinger was a longtime undefeated Invicta champion and fought Cyborg in the main event of her first fight ($100,000 base), she was getting paid far above her actual value.

Tbh, i really hope she gets another chance (against some beatable opponent, like Bethe Correa)...
She had a very decent run at invicta, but failed miserably everytime she did something UFC related (First failed at tuf, then had this 3 fight skid).

She vs Correa these days would be a good looser leaves town match.

I don't know or follow her. Does she even do S&C? Doesn't look like it. It looks to me that, like Ladd, she can lose a few pounds just with a more strict diet.

I dunno do they do hard S&C work over there or just squeeze the fruit? Anyone know? Their guys look like Greek statues and that Chinese girl she last faced looked like a piece of steel compared to her.

Well, technically ONE has a "no dehydration" policy for weigh-ins, and they use specific gravity urine tests to ensure fighters are above a certain level before allowing them to step on a scale. However, not only does ONE have zero transparency regarding this testing and the weigh-ins (done behind closed doors and no rsults released to the public), but there have been rumors that certain fighters, particularly Lee, have been allowed to weigh-in dehydrated. for example: Here's Angela in January 2017, two months before here fight with Jenny Huang:

now here she is a day before weigh-ins in March:

She looks significantly more drawn in the face.

As for what her S&C is like, I don't think she posts enough of her workout to social media to be able to tell.

shes gonna need to get a new nickname

Starting to look like someone posted the solution to the "Angela Lee Puzzle" on the internet

I wouldn't say someone found the solution, as both losses were very different. I would say that she's facing stiffer competition, however, and she's no longer outsizing them.

Things being a little quiet on the wmma front I decided to dust off my grandma's old crystal ball and peer into the future.

Montevideo seemed a good choice - I've always liked that place since watching Battle on the River Plate as a kid - but shock horror Liz Carmouche got injured in the open workouts. Luckily there are plenty of flyweights on the card and Dana says just give the shot to the gal with the most IG followers.

Which is how Rachael Ostovich ended up fighting for the belt, she won too, took Shev down (kani basami) and broke the champ's ankle.

What kind of sick fantasy is this?!

OK. I better not tell anyone about the dream I had where Alex Chambers is booked for her comeback on the UFC Shenzen card. Weighing in for the big fight Zhang is found to have tattoos on her and is escorted off the premises never to be seen again, and Astro GOAT is given a shot with half a day's notice (being the only ink-free fighter from China - well close enough OK - available for the bout), where she ends the reign and career of Android after obliterating her knees with a barrage of oblique kicks.

Another example of recency bias. Everyone said Andrea Lee got a bump up the ranking because she was a hot blonde. Well what about Roxy and Maia? People will forget times like this when they come up with their conspiracy theories in the future. The times you should be skeptical about ranking is when the UFC pulls people for reasons other than injury.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say? All that really happened is joanna was removed as she's going down to SW, and Maia was ranked way too low after beating Davis so that got fixed.
Speaking of pushes I called Nicco vs pena winner being jumped into title contender status here and Pena is #4 with that performance and Betch is out.

There is no get fixed there is no one person fixing things. Maia has a fight coming up which is why now of all weeks she moves up 3 slots.

Does anyone know if Emily Ducote is still under contract to Bellator since her next scheduled
appearance is Invicta August 9th against Janasia Morandin at 115 lbs which can be seen on
UFC Fight Pass live.

Good question. We have seen Invicta lets fighters fight for Bellator but I can't remember a Bellator fighter fighting for Invicta while under contract.

Not just a fight, but a fight with the aforementioned Roxy this Saturday. I'd guess that had a lot to do with the rankings movement as well.

Personally, I pay almost zero attention to the rankings. I just want to see good fights, rankings be damned. But I can understand the "if it's a sport the rankings should reflect that and be used accordingly" argument as well.

Tonya is 0-3 in UFC, I know one fight was Cyborg, but still it is 0-3, maybe, maybe it's reason...She is old (for fighter) and after nasty injury,it's not gonna work in UFC.

They had to keep joanna in 125 rankings, because she was in title fight, how it would look if you got champion in your promotion who won belt against unranked oponnent, and who would sanction fight like it. White said just after fight jj should fight as strawweight, so they could do this long time ago, but for promotional reasons they kept jj in rankings. Also it's not really moving down tbh, she wasn't really preparing for 125 lbs, camp was like 7 weeks or even 6. There's no "moving down" here tbh, atlough jj looking bigger these days, but imo it's, because longer break not because she "moved up".

Joanna has officially signed with the Ballengee Group. Same as Tony. Neither one could get shit done with the UFC anymore.

Tony has practically given up on 155 which is insane and the UFC appears to be in a deadlock with Joanna probably because of the UFC's current contracting stance in the ESPN era (i.e. we pay you pennies on the dollar or shelve you).

Fun facts though.

The last time Joanna was with a management company was Paradigm in 2017 when they refused to not only negotiate on her behalf with the UFC but they wouldn't even return her messages for the Rose fights so she had to negotiate those fights on her own with her sister being the lawyer helping. She has been without management since. Convenient for the UFC.

Tony was also with Paradigm and he made the switch when it was revealed they were deliberately protecting Conor from him. That is they wouldn't even attempt to negotiate such a fight.

Paradigm = UFC Bootlicker Holdings LLC - my opinion

Bonus. Jennifer Goldstein who is the current General Counsel for Ballengee Group and is pictured with Joanna on her IG the other week was also the Former Principal and General Counsel for Paradigm until 2017.

Things should get interesting in the coming months for both Tony and Joanna. Two my all time faves. Obviously. ;)

This also re-confirms that the 125 tournament is next.

Yes the world of big money involves potential and real conflicts of interest. It behooves successful people to understand them and hire qualified trustworthy people. I wish Joanna all the best whatever path she chooses. She's given a lot to mma. I've enjoyed every minute of it.
