Official Women's Division Discussion #26

Wine, women and song occupied me so efficiently last night that I missed the whole UFC card - now knowing the results there isn't any reason to check out Ladd/GDR (i'll just find the gif). Were the other two women's fights both in the undercard? Worth seeing spoiled?

Lee's thoughts about her fight:

IMO which is worth just that, the first fight was a pretty good scrap, the second not so much, and no comment about the third.

What a shit show Sacramento was, sherdog was right probably the worst card ever.

Van Buren tho, was great to outclass Souza like that was awesome to see. Hope the matchmakers actually give her that top 10 or at least 15 next.
Nicco v Pena was close, and the match was probably won on the cage saving Pena from getting swept early in the 3rd. Credit to Pena thought it's a good win and she had alot of disadvantages coming back from pregnancy and as a replacement.
The Faber stop was a little questionable but that GDR stop is historically bad. Ladd is young thought and has lots to fix plenty of time to rebuild. Hopefully the Spencer vs Cyborg doesn't have shit like that end it, and Nunes defends 145 next.

Van Buren really impressed me last night, she looked great and I'm very interested to see what's next for her.

I think Pena just ended up being a little too strong for Montano, plus Nicco made some mistakes in the 2nd and 3rd that really cost her.

As for the main event, I'm in the group who thinks that was a terrible stoppage. I think GDR still would have gone on to win, but I dont know that and that's why you let them fight. Aspen looked fine sitting there after Herb stepped in, and we have seen people come back from worse to win. It's a main event, let them fight!

shes gonna need to get a new nickname

Starting to look like someone posted the solution to the "Angela Lee Puzzle" on the internet

Was all geared up and excited to catch the UFC card last night, then saw the footage of Aspen's weigh-in...I watched the rest of the card but couldn't bear to watch the almost assured train wreck that was going to be Aspen's fight.

Was I seeing things or did Nicco Montano look like she was considerably bigger last night
compared to her previous fights at 125 where she looked skinner and not for the better.

She was most likely bigger in the cage than she was when she was fighting at 125, but she was up against Pena who isn’t exactly a big bantamweight either.

The 115 division is amazing. Every month it seems like a new prospect comes out of nowhere. Before that 1 night tournament I had no idea who Brianna was and now she might be the one of the best prospect in the best division.

Thanks to CSAC we should have the fight night weights for all the fighters soon. Gonna be interesting to see how heavy Montano and Ladd were when they stepped in the cage.

To foster some discussion in this discussion thread. With Ketlen Vieira apparently not even cleared to train yet, do you think De Randamie should be next for Nunes? GDR has won five in a row now and is 5-1 in the UFC. That lone loss? Amanda Nunes. They fought what is damn near 6 years ago now (where does the time go?!) and Nunes won by first round TKO. Looking at the Bantamweight top 15, I see no one else who even comes close to deserving a shot. Pennington and Aldana are both top 10 and they fight next week. Do you slingshot the winner of that to a title fight? Rocky has only fought once since being mauled by Nunes, and that was a loss to GDR. With a win Aldana would be on a 4 fight win streak with two wins over top 15 opponents (although the other one is Bethe Correira). That being said, I think Aldana would fare about as well against Nunes as every one else has recently, which is to say not well at all.

So there is GDR, or shoving Aldana into contention with a win. Or does Nunes wait for the Cyborg rematch, make a ton of money, and call it quits while she is at the top? What do you guys think should happen? What do you WANT to happen?

this fight was at 135. guess it's normal she would look bigger

I absolutely think GDR should be next. Nunes can hang on to the 145 belt and dust it off whenever the UFC needs a title shot for a card, and Cyborg can go crush 125 and 135 lbs. women and the occasional actual FW in another org. I also think Aldana in the cage with Nunes should be considered a crime against humanity at this point.

i think GDR should be next, and can't see any younger prospects that UFC would want to push into a titlefight with Nunes at this point.
not sure Nunes Cyborg 2 will be such an astronomically bigger payday than the first one, and i don't think either fighter will retire after that anyways. (except maybe cyborg..?)
Nunes has said in recent interviews she wants to keep fighting and making history until she can't do it anymore, and she definitely seems to be enjoying herself fighting these days. Cyborg says she wants the rematch but has only 1 fight left on her contract. UFC understandably doesn't want to put themselves in a situation where cyborg potentially wins back the belt and then goes to another promotion, which is why they insist on her signing a new deal before she's granted the rematch. if they can solve this, i'm sure the rematch will happen.

Yes definitely that's the fight to make, I mean, everyone has reached near consensus that 'NuNeS iS tEh gOaT' so it feels like it's the perfect timing for her to get slept ;)

I notice I didn't put my opinion, but yes I agree GDR should get the next shot.

I thought UFC had a clause where a champions contract automatically gets extended to prevent that from happening? Or was that just a load of crap? (it very well maybe. I ain't no contract lawyer!)

Yes GDR should get the title shot versus Nunes. It's rare when we all agree on something.

Yep, Nunes/GDR 2 ...... as long as Herb doesn't get to ref it again.

PFL
Kayla Harrison's good but now I'd like to see her against stronger competition. Will catch up on the Genah Fabian & Larissa Pacheco victories this week.

ONE
Michelle Nicolini's an excellent jiu jitsu player. Angela Lee didn't get submitted. To me she's exciting to watch. Will check out Bozhena Antoniyar vs. Bi Nguyen, everyone's saying it was a close one. Also Jihin Radzuan def. Jomary Torres via submission.

Bellator
Julia Budd made short work of Olga Rubin via TKO (punches) Round 1 to defend women’s featherweight title. What's next for Budd? Will watch Juliana Velasquez def. Kristina Williams via TKO (punches).

UFC
Brianna Van Buren was star of weekend for me. Souza was no easy opponent. BVB dominated her. While smiling. Give her a top ten opponent. Glad Nicco Montano made it back to the octagon. She had a good first round before fading. Pena's personality and voice to me is like nails on a chalkboard. Thinking further on GDR v. Ladd stoppage. Ladd looked horrendous at the weigh in. Actually kind of looked asleep during the fight. Completely outclassed. Safety first and foremost.
