Official Women's Division Discussion #25

All this talk about entertainment vs sport has me thinking about what turned me into a WMMA fan more than a general MMA fan. During the end of Strikeforce to when WMMA was introduced into the UFC were some of the most funs times for me as a fan of this sport. The fighters during that period were not the most technically sound but they fought with emotion and passion and they were always looking to finish their opponent. I think I actually prefer it that way. I think this is why we have not seen WMMA fighters as popular as Tate, Ronda and Cat(Would have been even more popular if she was not so inactive) since then.

If you have enough time re-watch Miesha/Kedzie, Miesha/Cat, Penne/Waterson, Ashlee Evans Smith/Fallon Fox or either Ronda/Tate fights and then compare them to the WMMA fights we get now. They all were emotionally charged and passion filled fights. They all made me forever fans of all of them with the exception of Fallon Fox. I thought that maybe I was becoming less of a fan of MMA and WMMA but I think I am just less of a fan of the less emotional fights we get now. We are now stuck in a terrible(maybe exaggerating a bit) era filled with fighters fighting so safe that they are never in range to hit their opponent. The queens of this era seem to be Holly Holm, Katlyn Chookagian, Maryna Moroz, Julia Budd and Danielle Taylor. I am still a fan of a lot of girls nowadays but its nothing like how it was back then. I never missed a WMMA fight back then now I have a DVR filled with fights I have not seen yet

It's the evolution of the divisions. We saw this going on with the men as well. Fighters are being trained to point fight rather than risk a loss. A win is a win. Even losing a decision there is less likely a chance you get cut versus getting finished. Stakes are a bit higher in the UFC versus Invicta, where you need to impress to get into the UFC. It's one of the problems with the current points system. Attempting to finish is not a high criteria.

Results from Brazil's Batalha MMA card Saturday

  • Ariane Sorriso def Bianca Sattelmayer by unanimous decision improves to 9-1
  • Pamela Mara def Evelyn Sass by TKO round 3

Well the UFC can't change the scoring system but they can decide who to cut. Perhaps they should dump one of these risk averse fighters straight after a win just to send out a message.

the first round stats for chookagian flashed up at the end of the round...........7 strikes landed out of 62, later on she landed a total of 21 out of 128 attempts
all 3 fights last night put me to sleep, overall standard was yawn inducing
I'm not a fan of fighters who spar. Chookagian went 22 of 115 against Carmouche as well. Overall her career accuracy is 31%. Pretty poor for someone with 11 pro and 7 ammy fights.

Problem with that is you are taking away the truly talented and got back to the brawlers with no technique. Might as well just run an amateur promotion then.

Really it is all about the booking. Styles makes fights so if you have two counter punchers it will be a tough night out.

Talked to Shannon this morning - will post my article this afternoon.

One thing I can tell you that was a question on here - no title tournaments. She is interested however in a possible Young Guns tournament.

Expect two title fights in May. Will have the main event announced for May's event on the article.

Agreed on a Young Guns tournament. I had a similar thought when thinking about that discussion. Then I was thinking of those promotions that already do that for Invicta and did not bring it up.

I wish I had time to write up a decent up and comers list along with decent vets for promotions to pick up.

Looking forward to other events this year from Invicta.

I am opting for the "if you can't say anything nice" plan.
I'm gonna say Chookagian is Holm lite, just with half the athletic ability, and a lot less experience.

I think a young guns tournament would be really good idea for Invicta at 125,135, & 145. Felicia Spencer and Amber Leibrock both came out of an amateur tournament for Invicta. You could do it at 115 and 105 too, but I feel like those weight classes have a ton of depth already.

I have to admit I was very pleased to see them put on Morandin/Jandiroba.. as I think it would be foolish to crown Mizuki when she is almost definitely UFC bound.

Yes I agree the matchmaking is key and at the moment it isn't great. I'm sure plenty of you can predict which matchups are going to be barnburners and which stinkers. Putting four wmma fights on one card and none on the next doesn't seem sensible either.

Some of the worst offenders when it comes to being risk averse aren't particularly talented and crowd pleasers don't necessarily have to be brawlers. It's a great that women fighters are earning good money on the best promotion and it would be a pity if fair minded fans end up agreeing with the haters because of poor matchmaking, poor card placement and the reality you describe where fighters are being trained to point fight.

The promotion can do something about it and it doesn't necessarily mean rewarding brawling over talent.

Here you go - expect a press release later this week with most of the InvictaFC 28 card.

Great article, thanks for sharing.

I watch Invicta on fight pass. It's one of my favorite reasons for continuing to pay for that subscription. The price is good and I'm happy continuing to support Invicta. They have some exciting things planned for 2018 as the sport continues to grow and evolve.

Appreciate all the dialogue here.

I understand where you are going but I disagree its about matchmaking. Every fight most of the girls previously listed in are boring. Taylor is 100% on boring fights. She even had a boring fight with Ham and Penne. Both of them are known for exciting fights. Katlyn is also 100% on boring fights. Budd has been a wet blanket every fight since her loss to Amanda Nunes.

110% agree with you.
Ronda Rousey is what got me into watching WMMA and MMA. .
Most every women fighting back then went after it as savagely as possible. They were desperate to finish each other. That was WMMA to me. It looked particularly savage because...well, I ain't seen women like that, and it was interesting that they couldn't really rely on one hit ko power like the bros. Invicta cards were generally the same even if they couldn't finish. Invicta is still mostly going strong in that sense because the women are HUNGRY. Not so much in UFC. Not all the time. In the end it's about money and safety nets/etc. Can't blame them in that sense or any fighter, but I don't like it.Still, I am a Holm fan. Enjoyed every one of her fights in UFC. Shevenko too. I appreciate counter strikers, I guess.

Wardog Cage Fight 16/Grachan 33 results: Yu-Ri Shim defeats Erika Saziki by TKO 4:24 round 1.

In her previous losses, Shim showed a weakness in using the cage wall to get up from bottom position. Apparently, the gym she trains at, Team Genius, lacks a cage and mats on the walls. She showed a marked improvement in that aspect in this fight.
