All this talk about entertainment vs sport has me thinking about what turned me into a WMMA fan more than a general MMA fan. During the end of Strikeforce to when WMMA was introduced into the UFC were some of the most funs times for me as a fan of this sport. The fighters during that period were not the most technically sound but they fought with emotion and passion and they were always looking to finish their opponent. I think I actually prefer it that way. I think this is why we have not seen WMMA fighters as popular as Tate, Ronda and Cat(Would have been even more popular if she was not so inactive) since then.
If you have enough time re-watch Miesha/Kedzie, Miesha/Cat, Penne/Waterson, Ashlee Evans Smith/Fallon Fox or either Ronda/Tate fights and then compare them to the WMMA fights we get now. They all were emotionally charged and passion filled fights. They all made me forever fans of all of them with the exception of Fallon Fox. I thought that maybe I was becoming less of a fan of MMA and WMMA but I think I am just less of a fan of the less emotional fights we get now. We are now stuck in a terrible(maybe exaggerating a bit) era filled with fighters fighting so safe that they are never in range to hit their opponent. The queens of this era seem to be Holly Holm, Katlyn Chookagian, Maryna Moroz, Julia Budd and Danielle Taylor. I am still a fan of a lot of girls nowadays but its nothing like how it was back then. I never missed a WMMA fight back then now I have a DVR filled with fights I have not seen yet
It's the evolution of the divisions. We saw this going on with the men as well. Fighters are being trained to point fight rather than risk a loss. A win is a win. Even losing a decision there is less likely a chance you get cut versus getting finished. Stakes are a bit higher in the UFC versus Invicta, where you need to impress to get into the UFC. It's one of the problems with the current points system. Attempting to finish is not a high criteria.
