Official Women's Division Discussion #25

UFC Weigh-In Results:
Justine Kish (125) vs. Ji Yeon Kim (125)
Juliana Lima (116) vs. Randa Markos (116)
Mara Romero Borella (125) vs. Katlyn Chookagian (125)

Who y'all got? I got Kim SD, Markos UD and Chookagian SD. I feel like Kish vs. Kim is gonna be close, I don't think Kish should have gotten the nod from the judges in her fights vs. Ansaroff or Yoder so I feel like this one will be a close scrap between the two, even if Kim lost to Pudilova, her striking looked pretty good in that fight. I feel Borella vs. Chookagian could go either way, I really want to see what Chook is made of at 125 and I feel like she could be a dominant force so I'm gonna have to go with her here. I think they'll pitch the winner against Jessy Jess.

Good calls.

It's popular to knock some fights for being dull & I can understand why many feel that way. Presumably I'm in the minority with this view but I look at every fight like a lot is on the line for each fighter so each fight is super important for them and their camps. Each fighter desperately wants to win. I'm fascinated seeing the strategies they use based on the skill-set and durability they have. Of course it's radically different for every fighter. I enjoyed this evening's fights even though we didn't have much in the way of electrifying entertainment like Ham over Frey or Rose over JJ (two spectacular fights from recent memory).

As you say, your view is probably not shared by most of the UFC's customers and prizefighting is primarily an entertainment. It's a difficult balance between sport and entertainment and if the majority are not entertained it's bad for business. The last 12 wmma fights in the UFC have gone to the judges btw. Fighters have to realise that safety first isn't enough or they will be taking the Deanna Bennett route out of the ranks. I'm talking in general terms as I've yet to see last night's card.

Fair points. Thanks for your reply. Agree it's a difficult balance.

In the Kish vs. Kim fight the first was very much like the second round.

Per round (from fightmetric)
Kish vs. Kim

RD1 23 of 54 - 42% 14 of 50 - 28%
RD2
31 of 61 - 50% 18 of 69 - 26%
RD3
42 of 88 - 47% 36 of 96 - 37%

Just finished watching the fight again. Scored the first round for Kim and I think she squeaked out the 3rd round as well. A lot of the strikes that Kish "landed" in the first round either barely touched or got blocked, and she ate a number of good clean punches in return. Kish only got 1 or 2 good low kicks and a body kick in the 1st, she did land a bunch of low kicks but they no power on them and I could see that she was both off-balance and didn't have her hips opened up, it was basically the kicking equivalent of arm punches. 30-27 is definitely wonky, 29-28 is pretty reasonable and I'd agree with it.

I'm convinced Chookagian and Taylor are the same fighter.
the first round stats for chookagian flashed up at the end of the round...........7 strikes landed out of 62, later on she landed a total of 21 out of 128 attempts
all 3 fights last night put me to sleep, overall standard was yawn inducing

Not a fan of last night. Fights or judging.

‘This is Rose’s time now’: Valentina Shevchenko thinks Rose Namajunas wins rematch with Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Rose Namajunas shocked the world with her first-round TKO win over former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 217, but training partner Valentina Shevchenko wasn’t surprised.

Although some are predicting that the Polish striker will bounce back from the loss when she faces “Thug Rose” in a rematch at UFC 223, Shevchenko thinks their second meeting will play out a lot like their first.

“I do not think it will be a different result,” Shevchenko told MMA Fighting after considering the rematch between Namajunas and Jedrzejczyk.

“Of course, it will be different because Joanna will prepare herself stronger, but at the same time, Rose will prepare stronger as well. I expect it to be a very hard fight, but I think the result will be the same.”

Shevchenko has three victories over Jedrzejczyk from their Muay Thai days. Asked if she felt Jedrzejczyk improved from any of the losses that she handed her, “Bullet” underlined what a good champion Jedrzejczyk had been, but insisted that Rose would remain at the top of the strawweight bracket.

All this talk about entertainment vs sport has me thinking about what turned me into a WMMA fan more than a general MMA fan. During the end of Strikeforce to when WMMA was introduced into the UFC were some of the most funs times for me as a fan of this sport. The fighters during that period were not the most technically sound but they fought with emotion and passion and they were always looking to finish their opponent. I think I actually prefer it that way. I think this is why we have not seen WMMA fighters as popular as Tate, Ronda and Cat(Would have been even more popular if she was not so inactive) since then.

If you have enough time re-watch Miesha/Kedzie, Miesha/Cat, Penne/Waterson, Ashlee Evans Smith/Fallon Fox or either Ronda/Tate fights and then compare them to the WMMA fights we get now. They all were emotionally charged and passion filled fights. They all made me forever fans of all of them with the exception of Fallon Fox. I thought that maybe I was becoming less of a fan of MMA and WMMA but I think I am just less of a fan of the less emotional fights we get now. We are now stuck in a terrible(maybe exaggerating a bit) era filled with fighters fighting so safe that they are never in range to hit their opponent. The queens of this era seem to be Holly Holm, Katlyn Chookagian, Maryna Moroz, Julia Budd and Danielle Taylor. I am still a fan of a lot of girls nowadays but its nothing like how it was back then. I never missed a WMMA fight back then now I have a DVR filled with fights I have not seen yet

Great post. There are still plenty of good fights, but you did list some all-time greats. Really like the Tate-Kedzie fight.

I don't see it. Kish did plenty enough to win the first round much like she did in the second round. Kish mixed it up more and landed enough decent strikes, also to Kim's head and body, aside from the legs kicks.

Kim barely did anything in the first and second rounds.

The judges were crap in my opinion in that fight and there were other questionable crappy decisions that night too. I have seen a good number of rightly concerned posts on the judging of this fight, MMA losses fan interest from these situations.

But we all have opinions and we will have to disagree on that.

Kish seems to specialize in these kind of situations. Outside of the Herrig fight, every one of his UFC matches has been judged pretty wonkily - some say she should have lost to Ansaroff, she damn well should lost to Yoder and now it wsa quite clear she was supposed to win.

Haha. I mentioned this stuff on the previous page. I never much like blaming the fighter for what the judges see. I'm not going to blame Kim for her good fortune in getting a win.

(Edit) I felt the Kish vs. Kim fight was a pretty decent scrap. I would have liked to see Kim be more aggressive in the first two rounds, see her match Kish's aggression a bit more. So seeing most of the fights coverage and comments be about the judges is unfortunate. Of the women's fights in the UFC last night it is the only fight people have defended somewhat in different threads I have seen - and not the usual defenders of women in MMA either.

Just people defending a decent fight but mostly bemoaning the judging.

I need to go back and re-watch the glorious-ness that was Tate / Kedzie, Tate / Zingano and Tate / Rousey 2. I now have a valid reason to get Fight Pass again! :D

Bah, you should be able to find most of them on Youtube or elsewhere.

Definitely agree that the judges hit the bong early in this event, the judging was just comically bad all night, it crossed the line to the point where I was like "I'm not even mad anymore".

Decided to watch Katlyn vs. Mara again. ATT needs to work their mojo on Mara, her standup is in serious, serious need of help. She looks decent as long as she's only throwing one punch or kick at a time from her right side, but whenever she went to throw a combo everything goes to pieces. Her feet get crossed up and she's leaning out of stance with her head straight in the air while waving arm punches at her opponent. It wasn't quite Cindy Dandois bad, but yeah, it needs a lot of work. At least they have the right idea for now in having her stick to single strikes most of the time and she's actually not bad at picking her spots to land, but this is something that's going to be very limiting going forward. She needs a jab, footwork, and the ability to work in 2-3 strike combos.

As for Katlyn. Uhg. Did I mention how much her style annoys me? But knowing how judges often score fights, I can't even be mad.

Terrible judging. Agreed.

Mara has always waited for a chance to throw a big bomb. She works in some decent low kicks but she just takes her time looking for that one big punch. At least she is looking for combinations now but I have to agree she needs to develop further. Her striking background is MT so I expect her head movement to be comparatively bad. ATT ought to help her develop and I look forward to seeing it happen.

Katlyn's style is really there to avoid a straight up fight if she can. I can't blame people for not liking it. I have mixed feelings about it. I see what she is doing but I would like to see more.

The best striking exchanges I have seen from Chookagian were in her fight with Linn Wennergren. Wennergren brought it to Chookagian forcing a constant and fun series of striking exchanges. I felt that fight could have gone either way but I ultimately felt Chookagian did enough to get the win but it was very close. That fight is off the internet as far as I can tell now.

Wennergren's last fight was a bit of a questionable loss too. Too bad.

In case you missed it Ronda has signed to the WWE
