Official Women's Division Discussion #25

well, that certainly sounds like the definition of a size bully

All it means is that the UFC didn't have the proper weight division for her until now, so she previously just had to utilize what was available.

Her jits is obviously legit so that alone will make her a dangerous opponent.

A few fights announced icymi

She also had to make herself look like a starved concentration camp victim to make weight. I believe she also said the dehydration necessary made her mind work poorly in her fights. I'm hoping she'll fight more skillfully without the extreme weight cut.

Yeah, but she still makes beginner mistakes. In trying to throw a round kick with power she winds up which slows her down considerably. Her hips do not even turn over quickly. Steps instead of shifts feet for her switch kick, etc. For someone who is supposedly a MT practitioner, well . . .

UFC Weigh-In Results:
Justine Kish (125) vs. Ji Yeon Kim (125)
Juliana Lima (116) vs. Randa Markos (116)
Mara Romero Borella (125) vs. Katlyn Chookagian (125)

Who y'all got? I got Kim SD, Markos UD and Chookagian SD. I feel like Kish vs. Kim is gonna be close, I don't think Kish should have gotten the nod from the judges in her fights vs. Ansaroff or Yoder so I feel like this one will be a close scrap between the two, even if Kim lost to Pudilova, her striking looked pretty good in that fight. I feel Borella vs. Chookagian could go either way, I really want to see what Chook is made of at 125 and I feel like she could be a dominant force so I'm gonna have to go with her here. I think they'll pitch the winner against Jessy Jess.

Kim, Markos and, as every one of my names ends in a vowel, out of loyalty I have to pick Borella.

I have Kish and Markos on my fighter roster for TCE's Sherdog UFC Real Time game, and they are on the roster based on my expectation that they will win these two fights.

The newly minted UFC women’s flyweight division has suddenly become the place to be for fighters who were having a hellacious time squeezing down to strawweight or fighters who were unable or unwilling to cut down to that division and were instead forced to engage with giants at bantamweight.

On Jan. 27, another bantamweight contender moves back to the division. Katlyn Chookagian, who went 2-1 in the UFC while competing at 135 pounds, steps into the Octagon as a 125er and faces Mara Romero Borella.

I always assumed in the past it was because she practiced a more clinch heavy style of Muay Thai, but I think she didn't learn her fundamentals, specifically her boxing and defensive ones. She's big, durable, and athletic enough where it doesn't really matter against lesser competition.

I think Jason Parrilo or Cordeiro would really work wonders for her tho, she has all the athletic ability in the world.

I also think she got by on size and strength. Really, speed and fundamentals are lacking. And her clinch game (from a pure MT standpoint) needs a lot of work. Leaves way too much space, and primarily uses strength instead of proper hip and foot position.

Justine Kish is like the Diego Sanchez of WMMA; she basically out-toughs, out-scrambles, and throws down more on her opponents to win fights. Like Diego, never a boring fight, but there's only so far she can go with her style. I want to see her in a fight with Alexandra Albu in the near future to who can out-Diego the other.

I tend to agree... it's just her strength/cardio/toughness was so overwhelming based on ability alone.

I guess that's my whole qualm with her, she has so much poetential athletically, it's almost limitless. But it is all wasted as of these days.

Kim - she looks a bit stronger; she's moving down in weight & Kish is moving up.
Markos - she's aggressive & tends to win every other fight (last fight she lost a decision to Grasso).
Borella - looks better since she started training at ATT.
Mainly hope they're good fights.

Helwani was suggesting that UFC are deliberately putting on weak Fox cards as some kind of negotiating tactic. Can't see it myself, but it is a puzzle why they've just put 3 wmma fights as a block rather than spreading them out, especially as they've proved pretty popular on the main Fox cards.

Anyway the ladies need to step up and put on a show, it'll be a disappointment if no-one picks up a bonus.
