Official Women's Division Discussion #25

On January 27th at UFC on FOX 27, the promotion will welcome yet another entrant into the flyweight division, as blue chip prospect and exceptional athletic talent Justine Kish steps back into the Octagon. Coming off her first defeat, Kish has been out of action for the better part of the year and hopes to restart her career in the newly minted 125-pound weight class. Today we are going to look at the good, bad, and ugly of Kish’s game, and how that will benefit or limit her in this division.

The thing that worries me the most about Justine Kish developing as a fighter is that she doesn't have integrated training at one single top-notch gym, but rather is "gym-hopping" among local gyms to get different aspects of martial arts trained. This may be a money-issue: perhaps she can't afford to live away from home and get top-notch training with a top-notch gym and coaches dedicated to assess her as a complete fighter and integrate her training. I'd be happier to see her training differently.

I would hope that Justine Kish is not struggling with money
since having to train each discipline at a separate gym is not
the most efficient way to train compared to training at one gym
where everything or most everything can be done in one location.

Waterson-Grasso is a great match up, that's something i will be definitely looking for.

About Invicta i don't think they should change anything, i just wish UFC would embrace the feeder league role that Invicta should have and send more fighters like Curran and Rawlings back to Invicta so they can develop their skills or test green fighters, no reason to keep low level ones at UFC. They're clearly not ready. Dern should be at Invicta, for example.

I don't know how close both Michelle and Grasso are on their train back to Invicta. Grasso lost to Felice. Waterson should be at Invicta any way. She was fighting 47 year old fighter at 105lbs and now she is suppose to be next title contender at 115lbs at so called premiere league. Any one care to explain how come Yasuko Tamadas age wasn't visible on this site when that fight was happening at Invicta FC 8.

I found this interesting.

I'd prefer Invcita FC stick with its current title situation, just bring in more fighters. Hopefully more events. Crown new champs. Make new contenders.

I was listening to a different Kish interview over the weekend. She mentioned she was very unhappy with her last fight. That she could not recognize herself when watching the fight afterward.

She definitely looks to be a better fighter in this upcoming fight.

I don't think you're opinion of them being Invicta bound matches reality. Waterson has only lost to Torres, a perennial top 5-6 since the start of the division and has only lost to the current champ, and the current champ herself.

Grasso has one loss in 10-11 fights, and that's to Herrig, who not only is much better than you think, but currently has the longest winning streak in the division at four wins, but is also in the top 10.

I found this interesting.

Obviously Yana cuts a lot of weight, but I find it highly suspect that CSAC recommended she move up in weight, when they didn't do it with Cyborg. Suspect as fuck.

Meatball has an opponent now.

Tyrell fighting up a weight class. Tough fight for her. I posted something from her recently where she mentioned no liking having to cut so much to get to 115lbs. Tough fight for her against Meatball at flyweight.

If they recommend Yana to move up, better not have Aldana,Vieira,or Nunes fight in California.

Yep. They did recommend Yana move up in weight class. Agreed that the others are big at bantamweight.

As long as they keep their weight around 150-4lbs, or so, in the week prior to their weigh ins they ought to be okay. They have about 13.5lbs to play with after weighing in to stay within 10% of their weigh in weight. Just cut that extra bit of weight over the course of that week prior to the weigh in.

It will be interesting to see what happens. (In California.)

I was left thinking of some stuff I was reading a while ago. Prior to the Evinger vs. Cyborg fight. (Hate how Evinger had to fight Cyborg to get into the UFC, and now she is injured too.) Cyborg had been walking around 170lbs or so. Fight week starts she is listed as walking at 154lbs. Probably keeping in mind the new weight regime there in California.

Gotta spend money to make money. Story of life. Fuck this world destroying potential contenders like Kish before they fully develop.

Kish vs Jessica Eye.

Something else involving Cyborg is suspect? Say it ain't so!!!!!!!!

Something is going on behind the scenes. I thought Yana was just calling out Cyborg for a quick 130k payday but now she is saying the UFC moved her fight to 145. You think this has anything to do with Megan? Because Megan is still signed to the UFC with no other 145ers for her to matchup with. I could see them fighting each other in a title eliminator. I did not think about this matchup before but I actually love it.

Megan won’t be cleared for a bit. Holly and Yana are teammates.
Could they have signed someone like Pam Sorensen?
I can’t think of any big 35ers that don’t already have a fight scheduled.

I could have sworn I had seen Osenio having a fight listed places but just noticed that was not the case. Fight called off and not updated? Well. I am going to post a few items that seem to have been missed so far this week.

1-26 April Osenio vs. Jomary Torres at One Championship FC, Manila, Philippines. (115)

1-26 Hainite Tuitupon vs. Emily Lyons at Fuel MMA: Uprising, Flint, Michigan. (115) Ammy

1-27 Golden Fights: Cage Wars 31, Grand Junction, Colorado.
Shandra Sinsireros vs. Morgon Mcclaugnerty (130) Ammy
Hailee Wemple vs. Stephanie Pernillo (115) Ammy
Anna Russell vs. Gina Murillo (155) Ammy

1-27 Ana Palacios vs. Jasmin Gonzales at Jasaji FL 18, Mexico. (105)

1-27 Darby Haverlock vs. Jocelyn Kaufman at FightForce: Great Falls Rumble, Great Falls, Montana. (150) Ammy

1-27 Shania Arredondo vs. tbd at KotC: Horizon, Albuquerque, New Mexico. (115 likely) Ammy

1-27 Kate Brummitt vs. Whitney Pyles at Honor Fighting Championship 2, Akron, Ohio. (135) Ammy

On Yana. Glad to see her added to the UFC featherweight division. Much needed addition. Her fighting anyone would be good. I don't like seeing people have to cut so much weight to get fights. That is necessary, at times, but I'd prefer it not have to happen.

I am hopeful Brenda Gonzales(-Means) actually gets a fight this coming year.

With the new champ late last year. Hard work getting that belt.

Are you talking about Herrig fight? I think UFC had herrig as a gimme fight for Kish, the truth is Herrig improved a lot in the last year and idk about you guys but i was surprised by her ground game, she had no clue about scrambles some years ago

I think Megan could be fighting in some months, why not? She was arguing with Cyborg that she could be back before July and she said herself she wants another fight before fighting Cyborg. I think it's a excellent idea.

For being a Muay Thai champ Kish isn’t very impressive on the feet. She was the definition of a size bully at strawweight.

She also had to make herself look like a starved concentration camp victim to make weight. I believe she also said the dehydration necessary made her mind work poorly in her fights. I'm hoping she'll fight more skillfully without the extreme weight cut.

2018 and people don't consider the good effects of moving up.. i thought after so many examples with RDA, Medeiros, Masvidal, Cerrone etc we already would have a clear understanding that it is, at least, a 50/50.. it has it's goods and it's problems

True, happy to see her at a more comfortable weight.

well, that certainly sounds like the definition of a size bully
