Avoiding bias and tribalism requires learning, effort, and deep thought. Few people can pull it off even after we learn what to watch out for (to the point that some bias researchers think it's essentially pointless to even try to teach people to avoid them). What you really mean when you say that he doesn't have a tribe is that his tribe is similar to your own and that it doesn't perfectly map with some simplistic labels. I don't think there's any sign that he's particularly committed to rational thought or to liberalism. He's also immature and obnoxious on a personal level.
