Multiplat Official Nioh 3 Discussion

Today is the day! My pre-order will arrive in the afternoon at some point (CET). Enjoy, everyone!

Forgot to download last night, so will get it loaded after work. Gotta take the kid to Judo so won't get to play until tomorrow. Looking forward to getting comfy with a cup of coffee and expanding the world past the demo walls.

Finished off the Warrior of the East set and super bummed. It's set bonuses add increased lightening damage, and for the final set piece adds life drain on lightening damage. The weapon wasn't in the demo so was totally expecting that once getting the weapon it would have imbue lightening, but no such luck. Don't have any magic yet that adds lightening damage, so kind of a bust so far.

Kid fell asleep at 8:30 and I got all my work done. Played from that time to 1 AM. Got a large chuck of the map explored. Still haven’t done the second main mission yet. I’m level 42 already. I think I’m doing a full completion run instead of rushing the main story. It’s just too addicting to do everything. The rewards make it feel worth it and the regions are dense with many things to do. Never felt like the game was wasting my time. Love that team ninja made the game this way as opposed to a giant empty world map that takes forever to traverse. Each region has felt pretty unique too. I can’t really think of a negative for this game. They’ve nailed everything so far. This might be the best game they’ve ever made.

Swapped my build away from the Warrior of the East since the full build sucks until you optimize weapon traits and get imbue lightning on the weapon, and rolling with the Crimson General set and swapped weapons to odachi for the set bonus. Looked through my forge texts and had an odachi with imbue water and trying to build off of that.

Beat another story boss with Baba Nobuharu. He was smashing me with his fake outs, then focused my strategy on just blocking and went pretty smooth.

Hoping to unlock some smithing abilities to temper and soul match soon.

Didn't realize I had the quest to upgrade the Blacksmith. Just unlocked the soul match/extract abilities. Doesn't quite work the same as previous games and not sure if I can inherit a skill over to another weapon.

Hard to research right now so early in the games life since there isn't much discussion and guides to read up on.

Made it through the first boss around level 18. Tried to go back to the dude sitting at the fire place thinking I could smoke him but nope, dude smacked me around pretty effortlessly. Will need to come back a bit later. First main boss was a great fight.

So I think I have finished about half the game now and I have to say that I am pretty disappointed with it. It’s not a bad game, it just feels really average. I loved Nioh 2 and thought it was like a 9.5/10 game, but this one I feel like I would say is a 7 if I’m being generous.

It lacks enemy variety. That was kind of a problem in the last game but somehow I’ve seen even less variety in this one dispute most of the enemies being copy pastes. The graphics engine is exactly the same from what I can tell down to the animations, which makes it kind of a head scratcher when you encounter performance issues. Almost all the areas you explore feel like you’re going through corridors; it’s very claustrophobic.

Probably the worst thing about it though is I feel like it’s actually super easy. I have only did a handful of times and I have yet to lose my souls. This is pretty jarring as the previous games were the kind of difficulty you expect from a souls like game.

Is anyone kind of feeling like this with this game?

Nioh 2 would have been easy if you were 30 to 40 levels over every enemy. If you want more of a challenge you can beeline the main story instead. That’s basically what the first two Nioh games are. It’s just big mission after big mission so in my opinion it’s not actually easier you just have so many options to explore and get absurdly powerful. Also I felt like Nioh 1 and 2 were corridors, Nioh 3 has been refreshingly different. I’m not really understanding the claustrophobic criticism. The art direction is much better too. I’m on the first map but every region has had its own unique identity and I think the game actually looks quite beautiful. Graphics are improved. It’s okay to not like it as much. Nioh 2 is a superb game and I still go back to it every now and then. Also important to keep in mind that new game plus and DLC solves a lot of your criticisms, especially the latter.

How long did it take you to beat? I liked Nioh 2 a lot but thought it was way to long. Enemy variety has always been an issue for these games IMO but it's not that big of a deal to me with games in general.

I mean if they didn’t balance out exploring with power creep that is still their failing. You could say the same about Elden Ring being open world but I felt sufficiently challenged in that game the whole way through.

I definitely feel like I’m right about the corridors. I know the second game was similar but I remember levels that had a lot of open spaces that you could navigate through like the haunted caves in this game. In this game, the caves and the field are the only ones I felt that way about so far.

I don’t know how you can say the art direction is better. It’s almost exactly the same as the previous games. Which is fine I like that plenty. The graphics themselves seem almost identical to how I remember two, down to most of the animations. Are you playing on computer or console? Maybe that explains the difference.

How long did it take me to be 2 or the first area of 3? I think probably 50 hours and maybe 15 respectively. Nioh 2 was a very long game I will give you that.

Variety for sure was an issue in 2 but it’s definitely worse in this game so far

Oh wow Nioh 3 seems way shorter. This is great to hear. I enjoy these games but I don't want to play for 50+ hours. Around 30 is kind of my max for these sort of games unless it's something really special.

Yeah and to be sure I’m not sure I’m at halfway. I don’t know how long the game is or if the next area will take longer. I’m just guessing because I’m at about halfway with most of the achievements like “find the kodamas” and such

I'm playing pretty sporadic, and only at the 3rd story boss in Yagamata with his flaming spear, so hard to say if I think it's to easy. I have seen a lot of other form posts like Reddit saying it's to easy, but just assumed that was the try hards saying how easy a difficult game was.

Is this like an action RPG where you lvl up and have stat points and attributes as well as different types of builds and a skill talent tree?

Pretty much yea. You're juggling two different characters (Samurai and Ninja) and you're looking to balance around them. I've got my trusty Switchglaive and Splitstaff. But down the road, I might re-spec (it's free) into some dual swords.

Im tempted to get it. I put it on my Steam wishlist for now. 70 bucks is a lot.
