And don't get me started on GOAT terrorist Osama Bin Laden

OK I was looking at the flag on the coral belt's gi and thinking it was the old Burma/Myanmar flag but apparently it's the more obvious one of Taiwan (herp derp). Apparently that dude is Jimmy Wu, a Taiwanese Judoka who coached the Saudi national team from 1981 to 1991.

Now here's where it gets interesting. Is that really bin Laden (rot in pieces) in the pic? The photo was originally published by Reuters in 2011 shortly after bin Laden was shot in his bitch ass face:

Reuters withdrew the article 2 days later:

But pics from the original article are still floating around:

So is that really bin Laden? If it is, a few details don't add up. The coach worked with the Saudi national team from 1981 to 1991 and said he didn't see bin Laden after 1984. He also says bin Laden attended practices "2 or 3 times/week" while a university student.

Bin Laden was born in 1957 and left university in 1979, when he started doing shit in Pakistan and Afghanistan so the timeline doesn't jive. But even if he was training Judo in Riyadh while jet setting learning how to be a goat fucker elsewhere, would he really have been allowed to train with the national team (presumably they didn't completely suck) and been promoted to shodan with hobbyist level attendance for only a few years max? Granted he was a rich fancy boy so maybe he got special treatment.

Rich fancy boy is a huge understatement considering the incestuously close relation of the Bin Laden family with the Saudi royalty, so that point wouldn't really be much of a concern in my opinion. I believe the son of Kaiser Wilhelm II got personal lessons by some Judo OG. I forgot if it was Kano himself or someone else though.

Genuinely curious if it's him in the pic or not. There's debate threads on reddit and most think the Judo coach is full of shit, but I can see it either way.

It could be legit and the Saudi govt made Reuters retract the article because they wanted to distance themselves from him.

But on the other hand, it's testing the coach's memory on a random kid from 30 years earlier and he says in the article he never heard the name bin Laden. So it wasn't a case of "here's some rich bin Laden kid that you need to promote to shodan in 6 months." And despite remembering a university student, the pic was taken after bin Laden left university and would have been in Afghanistan. So probably more likely it's another dude who KIND OF looks like bin Laden but doesn't seem tall enough. Even if his name was also Usama, that's a common middle eastern name. The doorman of my first apartment in NYC was named Usama lol.

My personal guess would be that it's not him, mostly because Bin Laden's hobbies later in life have been documented as being Volleyball and playing Counter Strike and emulated Nintendo DS games. One would think he'd show ANY type of interest in real contact sports ever again or maybe watch them, but the complete disconnect makes me doubt it.

Though i'm not one of the people who thinks Jimmy is lying for attention. I think he probably legitimately got something mixed up, which is also why he probably provided the photos with not hesitation.

Either way, i don't really care about it. What's important to me is that it's a good story, and stories don't have to be true to be believed. They just have to be told. And i'm telling this one quite often.

This is probably correct. Reuters withdrew the article two days after publishing, but the internet has continued to run with it so it's now a full blown urban myth like Marilyn Manson being Josh Saviano from the Wonder Years.

Interesting forensic work by brother @ChickenBrother . I personally don‘t really think it‘s him. How big is the trainer? Because he looks like some 1m70 stocky Asian dude, in which case Bin Laden would be taller. Then, if you guys say Bin Laden trained casually twice per week, I am seeing a dude in the pic who looks a bit more serious than that. Lastly, I never really thought it looked like Bin Laden.

I gave him a terrorist makeover in the most advanced editing software known to man to check if the looks fit. He still doesn't really look much like Bin Laden, though it wouldn't be completely implausible that it could be him 25 years later.

Bratan, thank you for your forensic contribution as well. I ran your output in our database with the help of our proprietary algorithm. The outcome is that there is a 24.1%-25.3% likelihood that this is bin Laden, under a margin or error of roughly 25%. Therefore we still don‘t know shit.

Work and life has kept me off the mats for over 2 years now and today im feeling I just want to bow on at some club somewhere in my gi that I'm too fat for and attempt to throw any adult male with a colored belt as hard as I can...

...then probably gas in three minutes and sneak away.

I feel bad for feeling this way. But at least you guys understand better than if I just said that to a non grappling friend.

Brother, to make you feel better, I am competing currently and am getting ipponed in humiliating ways. And truth is it‘s not even my age or not being in shape it s just that I suck.

When I first moved up to the advanced division I went almost a year without a win...in hindsight that felt better than not being able to train at all.

I get it. IIRC you are about my age? Clock is ticking if you are not in shape. Get your shit together because it becomes unlikelier each year that you will. But the reward is enormous. I am seeing quite a few 50 y o dudes competing and ipponing younger dudes.

Open weight categories be like:

Technique can only carry grapplers so far. The lightest weight that could probably win this is 90kg, but it is unlikely against the stronger +100kg judoka.
