Official Judo Thread

Brazil first gold medal is fat black female against an israeli, the leftists here are very happy lol

The uzbek was by far the best, very agressive, beautiful juji

Sardashvili impose caucasian pace and some wrestling techniques, makes sophisticated unorthodox style... I expect a lot of him this cycle.

Abe doesn't have competition only Vieru can give threats to him.

Lombardo is ready for big things, mentally and physically grown up, entered prime time.

Grigashvili are more offensive/aggresive judoka, someone like Lee-Jon give him threats but overall I'm going with him.

Tough decision but I going with another georgian Bekauri to defend olympic gold on experience.

Nice odds on Kotsoiev.

Riner to write a history.
4/7 ✅
Abe 1.22
Bekauri 3.50
Kotsoiev 11.00
Riner 1.16

But on balance Riner won his first senior worlds in 2007 when leg grabs were above table.
He won open World championships in 2008 and World championships in 2009 too, when leg grabs were allowed; and a lot of international tournaments, and Continental championships.

To be clear, Riner is a GOAT possibly THE GOAT and would have been a beast with or without leg grabs. But does anyone seriously think the leg grab ban DIDN'T benefit a dude who is 8' 13" with an 18 foot wingspan?

edit: calling Teddy's goat status into question after the performance he put on is too petty for me to abide. I strive not to be someone who diminishes the accomplishments of others.

dude is a grinder of an athlete. he's one of the few Judo celebrities, and he's done a lot of good. he's been nothing if not reliable, and if this is his victory lap then it's well-earned.

as for the games themselves... do we build a moat? obstacles?

I just don't understand how you can take something so fun and turn it into...whatever all that was?

Yeah gotta I've Teddy the modern GOAT status, no denying it.

Well, you guys know what hasn't been ruined for hard- core practitioners by bureaucrats trying to appeal to plebs for profits?

Not much.

Anyone use the Mizuno Yoroi keikogi? Thinking of buying one.

I'm also in the market for a judogi but I'm thinking of KuSakura which at current exchange rates is same price range as Mizuno. Over the summer I did a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan with the kids and my (Japanese) mother and I did a drop in at the Kodokan. It was a Wednesday which is their high level open mat night so was only top college judoka and sponsored athletes, plus scrubs like me who convinced the instructor at the front desk to let me train with the studs instead of hobbyists on the floor below.

I'm on the left with the red sash (Kodokan dunce cap for first-timers) wearing their loaner gi which was a KuSakura with a gray "S" logo on the left shoulder. Pretty sure it was the JZ student model made in China. It was easily the softest, most comfortable gi I've ever worn - possibly even softer than my Isami double weave BJJ gi. Apparently that model is made of the same cloth they use in their Japan made gis. Either way, it felt nicer than any Mizuno I've ever felt unless you want old school battle armor double weave. But FWIW most of the Japanese players were wearing Mizuno or KuSakura.

So how was the level at Kodokan? Yeah I have been eyeing Kazukara as well. Most classical brand. But I am really afraid to buy without trying especially from ancompany like Kazukara with home I can imagine it won t be fun to deal with a problem in sizing etc.

Speaking of armour gis one of my 2 gis is 15 y o Dax Moskito. They don‘t even do them anymore. Shit is so uncomfortable.

I think the top competition players train at a handful of Japan universities but Kodokan is legit. I told the instructor at the front desk I was a long time Judo, wrestling and BJJ guy but was Judo ikkyu though a little out of practice. He said I should do the regular adult men's class in the main dojo (7th floor) at 6 pm six nights/week EXCEPT Wednesdays, when it was on the 5th floor because high level guys were on the 7th that day. He suggested I go to the 5th floor at 6 pm.

So I change into the loaner gi and red sash they gave me and a loaner white belt. At the Kodokan, black belt puts on you. Ikkyu and below wear white belt. So I start up the stairs and see an older BB (even older than my 50 yo ass) tapping a white cane and holding an assistant's arm, and he hobbles into the room on the 5th floor. Oh hell no. So I keep going to the 7th floor but the door is locked. I had to go back to the 5th floor, run around to the side stairwell and follow some young BBs through the side door to get onto the 7th floor.

On the main mat there were about 200 dudes in BBs and apparently they're all Japan national level competitors or guys who train with them. There were exactly 3 guys NOT wearing BBs: me and two blond teenagers in green belts from their home school who were doing a course at the Kodokan and were partnered with each other. A coral belt bows us in and everyone starts doing fit ins to warm up. I look around for a partner and everyone walks away from me like the red sea and there's only one other guy with a red sash in the room (who is also getting ignored) so we partner up.

Dude was also passing through for a 1-time drop in, was a yodan from Colombia and said he was on their national team for a few years. We end up going with each other when randori starts because no one else would partner with us lol. He's a big dude and gets overzealous with a tai otoshi and twists my ankle, which is why my foot is canted at a weird angle in my post above.

If you ever want to feel like the fat ugly girl at the dance, show up on Wednesday on the 7th floor of the Kodokan at 6 pm wearing a red sash, not fluent in japanese and asking guys you don't know to randori with you. Bonus points if you're wearing a white belt. It was hilarious. Colombian homeboy asked like 10 dudes and got politely shot down 10 times.

They don't know you, don't want to hurt you and don't want to get hurt. After going again, Colombian dude finally got another dude to go with him so I stepped off the mat to watch. He got thrown 3 times and told me afterwards he was trying to muscle things but other dude shut him down completely.

I went to try my luck on the other side of the mat and a college dude my size agreed to go with me. He politely threw me a few times and then I got him with a forced osoto. He looked annoyed and hesitated getting up so in my best engrish I said gomenasai and asked if he had any "itai" anywhere. He shook his head without saying anything and I got the impression I had broken etiquette or something for muscling a throw with 'Murican wrestle-jitsu. We started again and he hits a reverse seoi that had me on his back staring at the ceiling and he could have slammed me but stopped before I hit the mat. I think he was trying to make a point. As soon as that round ended, a coral belt came over and told me to consider going down to the 5th floor. I considered it and decided not to, but a British expat told me when a coral belt there asks you to "consider" something, he's telling you to do it.

So I got told to GTFO lol. My other red sash homie wasn't doing much better so he agreed to go down to the 5th floor with me and since my ankle was killing me, we did newaza and worked on x guard and SLX sweeps while old blind guy did fit ins with another guy.

Apologies for the novel. I think the Kodokan is legit for Japanese style Judo. One of the instructors told me the Kodokan is separate from and not under IJF. They teach the martial form of Judo including leg grabs (though the instructor said younger competitors get annoyed if you go for them), plus non-competition techniques from the original curriculum. So Kodokan vs. IJF is like "Gracie Jiu Jitsu" vs. IBJJF i.e. not point fighting.

If I didn't have kids, family and work obligations, I would love to train there for a year or even a few weeks to clean up my game. These might be the dudes who ACTUALLY invented leverage and modified the crude, strength-based techniques of shitty American Judo so they could work for the smaller man.

Re. gis, KuSakura is the official gi of the Kodokan. They have a small gi shop on the ground floor and KuSakura has a showroom across the street with gis you can try on (wish I could have gone back during the day). But my KuSakura loaner gi was comfortable as all get out and I think it was their mid-grade model. And everything I've read online vouches for their sizing chart measurements being spot on.

I want to test for shodan (which my club told me to start preparing for) before rocking a swanky made in Japan gi but I need something in the interim. The club is laid back and lets me wear any gi but I feel like a shithead doing randori in a BJJ gi when lower belts are in proper Judo gis. On the flip side, my Ki International (cheap double weave from 1994) is uncomfortable and baggy as shit compared to modern Judo gis and feels like a tent made of plywood covered in sandpaper. That thing is 30 years old and frayed but the jacket still weighs 4.5 lbs bone dry in size 3.5 with fucking Gandalf wizard sleeves. My heaviest A2 BJJ gi jacket is 2.6 lbs.
