Official Judo Thread VIII

For people who have never strength trained, I always suggest something like Starting Strength or similar for a while to get a strength base going. Around a double bodyweight squat is a good bet.

More Judo - specific stuff I personally do are barbell split squats, lunges, and good mornings (to stand back up when I get pulled down) but some other guys will have some more valuable input here too.

Is there a consensus on weight lifting to get better at judo and bjj? Is it worth while and what ever sizes should I do?

Consider the differences of the sports first.
BJJ is not a sport, which requires a lot of explosive movements (such as big throws) or a lot of lifting of your opponent's weight.
It is a lot more about grip and strength endurance (aka, you need to delay the lactic acid production and learn to work through it). I would add core work.
In BJJ you actually have slow paced efforts, but not in the dimensions of PL.

Regarding judo, you could read somewhere in the previous pages.

Now, major importance:
Are you a recreational player or competitor?
If you are recreational player, you could lift anyway you want. Your carreer doesnt depend on it.
If you are professional competitor, you should have a few years of basic, compound lifts behind your back already. You should be exercising in a manner, suited for your sport (grappling type, your own style, duration and number of matches and etc). That includes, but its not limited to big lifts. Use combination of methods, that fits your style best.

Newfoundland and Labrador.

Is it different in other provinces? It goes yellow-orange-green-blue-brown-black here.

It's the same here in Manitoba and throughout Western Canada IIRC. I'm not too sure about the Northern Territories though you'd think they would follow the status quo.

Fuck yeah. Where are you located? I'm moving back to the homeland this summer, and I need a good club to join.

Gander, but over the years I've met most of the Judoka on the island. Where are you moving back to?

EDIT: Feel free to PM me for info too if you want

Yeah, come to think of it we had guys at the Atlantics and there were no issues so it must be similar throughout the eastern part of the country as well

Don't be. I'm still having issues now and I've been training properly for a month since my last injury.

Man, I bet that guy was embarrassed haha.

Join the club. I'm nursing a concussion right now. Got an accidental knee in the heard during newaza randori last Thursday (in the kids class ).

I thought nothing of it so I fought in a local tournament on Saturday. In my first and only match I felt like shit; lethargic, gassed, couldn't focus.

I fought well considering but eventually the guy beasted his way into tate shiho gatame, game over. Now I'm out the rest of our fuckin season basically :icon_cry2

The only thing I find funny is when fighters from certain clubs show up with multi colored belts for the kids. Like GTFO lol that's what stripes are for.

Dare I say.... Money grab? *gasps*

Going to be moving to Sin Jawns.

What's the competition scene like back in Newfoundland? I never got into Judo until I was up here in Ottawa.

Sweet. There's lots of clubs in SJ, MUN Judo is probably the biggest. St John's BJJ is also good and is where I'll be training when I move to YYT in september. If you want some background info on any of the clubs in there let me know, small place, I know everybody, but a PM is better.

Competition here is pretty good, usually average 50-60 people and I've always gotten 3 or 4 matches in each bracket (-81kg BBB, but they'll play with groups so everyone gets some fights in). There's always a fall classic in St. John's and a spring provincial tournament somewhere else on the island, and random stuff sometimes pops up as well. We're also sending a Judo team to the winter games in Prince George.

Yeah, our club uses the multi colored belts. They dont charge fr them either. They're kind of cool looking I guess but tape seems easier.

I didn't even pay for the brown belt I got tonight and my fees are like $300 a year including judo Canada fees

I do both recreationally, but I would like to compete in bjj for fun and to test myself.

This explains so much!

Have we even interacted in here before?

Come to think of it, I'm only a few hundred miles from Iceland. Can I be the new Einarr?

You have to fight him IRL for that honor. Broadswords or osotogari. To the death, but I repeat myself.

If youre thinking 'wow, that sounds a lot like highlander, and amazing!' you are correct.

I heard if you cut off his head you gain his homophobia.

I think he's about my size so osotogari it is. I will book my flight to Reykjavik tomorrow.

i think he was scared he might enjoy it, which i didn't get because i think the nordic countries are this socialist utopia where everything is like Modern Family but everybody's blonde. maybe it's some taboo viking thing...i mean...they are sailors.

you know, the types of dude that'll tell another dude he's f*ggy for using moisturizer or knowing the words to Shake it Off, but they're secretly prowling the casual encounters section on craiglist hoping to get so far up some butt they'd need King Arthur's help to pull 'em out.
