Official Judo Thread VIII

The timing footsweeps are upper echelon shit. My deashi is getting pretty wicked. Its the only throw where when I hit it cleanly I think there should be a score above ippon called "who's your daddy? I'm your daddy."

Hilarious, and deserves to be paired with this recent classic from Keenan.

"Foot sweeps are the essence of Judo."

What do you think of this statement?

I'm unsure myself, but I can respect that these techniques can deliver a fall which rivals hip throws, with far less effort.

Demonstrate the essence? Absolutely, minimal physical exertion, the definition of timing and balance, pleasing to the eye...and yes: big boom.

Nothing is more beautiful than a levitating sweep that puts uke's back parallel to the tatamis 3-4 feet in the air.

You know, I have this white belt who will let me throw him with big uchimatas and tai otoshi. Never quits and always gets back up to randori.

The one time I pull a deashi harai...or was it okuri ashi harai...he went straight up, and flat down. He told me no more foot sweeps (for the day) after that. Go figure...

I only hit one deashi in randori ever. I felt like a million fucking bucks when I did. It was my proudest moment in judo.

Getting dumped with a really slick foot-sweep doesn't just slap you onto the mat, it slaps your right in the soul.

Every time I get nailed with one, I need to take a half-second to reassess my life. "I'm grown ass man, and up against this guy I cannot even feet."

I hate the fact that belt grips can't be held for long periods of time (under the current ruleset you must attack instantly or let go) because the only way I can realistically use a forward throw against shorter defensive opponents tends to be by using a belt grip. There's just no other way to get the guy pulled up enough.

Ways I like for this situation is either 1) action-reaction, push down then up with his reaction 2) a combo that forces one of his feet to move to buy you time 3) do a throw from the outside that pulls downward instead

Yeah, against shorter guys I currently just use backwards reaps (osoto, kouchi, ouchi), forward hiza guruma/sasae, and a bastardized harai that is actually more of a sideways osoto.

But getting those shorter guys loaded up and over for a true forward throw I just can't do without a belt grab.

You got something against us short squatty guys..huh! :icon_chee

Any vids showing this technique?

I have not searched it, I used it myself with a left south paw stance, my tokui-waza, grip over the back, grip the lapel on the other side close to the shoulder, lurking in a leg and there you go! It can be used ken-ken also and its much faster than any hip throws such as harai-goshi since you don’t need body contact, you just lift the guy with your leg! When I used it the other guy had a right stance and since I was hidari my forwarded leg was close to his forwarded leg so it's very fast to lurk it in, get momentum and throw...

He means the nage no kata style Zanky, pulling them around and backing up like I was yammering about. Shit is pretty wicked if you've got the kazushi correct since there's no hang time

Almost, except in nage-no-kata you are using underhand grip and a rotating movement, I used to lift the leg directly without any pulling around, but the leg lifting action is very similar, its an ashi-waza and not a koshi-waza...

I pulled and lifted the leg but turns out I was doing them both half-heartedly. I pushed it and did both right and performed the move successfully.

I can definitely see why some might feel like they are the best judo has to offer. In order to make them work, you need perfect kuzushi, timing, and footwork. You can't power them AT ALL.

Same, add in sumigaeshi and thats my movest.

95% of the guys I fight are shorter than me, get all kinds of confused when fighting taller guys.
