For the guys that cross train in BJJ which throws do you usually use?

I have a small in issue in that with me only recently starting at the BJJ gym I don't want to upset them by burying them as they have really hard mats, plus I saw them doing jigari (sp?) rolls and they can't breakfall very well.

I guess I'm just looking for a low impact throw that doesn't make me look like a try hard at the new gym.

To clarify, they don't really start standing but after a round of rolling the guy wanted to do standing with me to begin and I just kind of stood there uncomfortably, defended the shot for a while then pulled guard.

My most successful throw in BJJ has always been uchi mata as a counter to singles/doubles. They're already pretty low to the ground, so they won't go down hard.

I am also a fan of o soto, harai goshi, and I can hit o uchi at will, though I think that's less to do with my prowess with o uchi, and more to do with you landing right into guard, thus a lot of BJJ guys won't fight it as hard.

If I were you, and depending on how receptive the coach is to new ideas, I'd talk to him about working on their ukemi more.

I thought about osoto.

I might give Uchi mata a go too. I want to get that working nice for my comp in a couple of weeks anyway. Cheers.

Hmm, I don't really want to talk to the coach about it tbh. I don't want to be that guy who has a few sessions and starts giving their own input.

It's important in BJJ to control grips and prevent the guard pull. I use a 2-on-1 sumi gaeshi a lot. Really fight for that grip in order to nullify the guard pull. Mine is a bit different than this video, but it's close enough that you get the idea.

As it should be, it's a lot less about what you WANT to throw, and what they offer you. If their plan is to pull guard, they aren't going to be offering much.

My level of Judo isn't to the point where I can hit a given throw on command, so it's really whatever I can hit at the time. When I do get a throw/trip, I just restrain from putting the uke through the floor.

But you never know man, you might just be the motivation that gym needs to practice Ukemi! lol

Easier said than done on an Uchi mata if the guy just grabs onto you though. That's why I rarely commit to it in the first place.

Ha yeah, we did some at the start but it was like beginner level ukemi for the most part other than a few exceptions, even purple belts. Plus if the guys aren't used to being thrown they may not actually use it when they're thrown.

Okay, I'm going to try my hand at video editing, just cuz.

I'm trying to decide:
a. What throw to feature?
b. What song to play?

I would make a tai otoshi highlight, but that's already been done before. Maybe o soto?

I'd love to use Keiichi Suzuki's Festivo, but I think I recall a Jacare highlight made with that song...

Hasn't been a good vid I've seen on sacrifice throws in a long while. You could also do modern pickups, most of the pickup HLs are old but there are quite a few good ura nage specialists out there.

In terms of music, please just don't use some s&%* dubstep song, or crap nu-metal. Video game battle themes (SF2 or any FF are usually good) or something classical/symphonic (Last of the Mohicans theme is a great one) usually work better and are less grating. The theme from Copeland's Rodeo could be great if you timed it right for big throws to hit at the same time the dynamics changed in the music.

I don't mind the trashy euro stuff to be honest.

Here's one with arkham city or origins music I think:

There's some awesome soundtracks on the arkham games IMO and if this isn't one then it sounds pretty similar.

Harai, Osoto, and footsweeps. I never bury anybody, mostly just use them as guard passes.

I've been at my new gym enough that when I stand and try to get uke to come with now there's always chorus of "NOOOO!!!" and "JUDO GUY! JUDO GUY!"

It's really nice, people will stay on their backs rather than play standup. hOKAY!

Suplexes and sacrifices FTW!
Asian percussions are also great to use for music.

Low impact on what?
I dont mind to pick up and slam on their front side, from where I take the back.
If the mat is hard, you could use the same sequence, but with a sacrifice, pulling uke down on his face, while you come under the arm and take the back .

I've been working on foot sweeps but I'm still not great at them.

Haha nice, I'll try and get to that point.

Just very hard mats, basically hard foam on concrete. I really wouldn't be surprised if people got koed when they landed on the back of their head.

Not sure what you mean, kind of like a forward tani otoshi?

Tani/ yoko otoshi like.
Point is not to stop moving, once you get them falling, but to continue moving towards his back.
Its even better if they manage to fall on their knees or elbows, because you could put hooks in before they even know.

I usually just kuzushi them over.

I'm expecting the stiff arm if I really try and move them so I'm thinking I'm going to pull them round a bit then see how they react and into a ken ken osoto.

Or an o goshi or something as they're not quite as dynamic as some of the other throws I do.

I'll give it a go. Probably gona try a snap down if they bend right down on me when I get my grip too.

Dunno how long this'll take me, I'll be at work the next 9 days straight, and I still have to train, so I won't bother to give a time frame for when I finish this.

It could take an afternoon, days, or weeks. It'll happen though.

*looks for Skillrex songs*

Ura nage! I'll make one of that.

If I do any symphonic music, it'll be:

Neither do I.

I can literally listen to anything but country.

Fear not, ura nage is incoming... eventually lol.

Yeah, I was shooting for a Japanese-style song because judo. Aside from that awesome Keiichi Suzuki song, I can't think of any others that would fit.

Perfect! Kawaii metal it is!

Uchi Mata said no "dubstep or nu metal", and this is certainly not that.
