Official Judo Thread VIII

You lose a lot of the forward throws without the gi (or at least they become a lot riskier and harder to pull off), but you gain some too. For example, I rarely throw people with sasae in the gi but I hit it constantly in no-gi and MMA. MMA, it's basically osoto, ouchi, kouchi, and sasae for me. Occasionally an uchi mata, mostly as a counter to sloppy outside trip attempts.

Same. Hit more sasae in my year of no gi dabbling than I ever did in Judo. Was still able to work the Sumigaeshi to good effect as well.

Also, holy shit did I forget about mat burn in the tops of the feet and toes in my layoff!

Not fun when wearing safety toed combat boots at work the next day.

It doesn't bother me much anymore, I can't shoot for legs against other skilled grip fighters. I'm glad I can keep my wrestling sharp when I cross train in catch.

Leg grab ban helped a lot my arching throws and leg trips.
Although, the other day I sparred with a friend who loves freestyle judo and did some leg grabs instinctively. Man, its so easy to take someone down with just a tap on the leg in the right moment...
My blockings of the turning throws also got quite good... open palm strikes and elbows to the ribs that is :icon_evil

oh man, I forgot about that...Ko Uchi to ankle pick!

My other favorite was Fake Seoi Nage to Kouchi makikomi with a leg grab.

kouchi to ankle pick is my favorite! i'm all

I need a sambo school...

Best all round rules in grappling, if only they added chokes for more betterer!

Yeah I wish the sambo was legit around here. I'd give judo up in a heartbeat if it was as popular over here.

There's a few sambo schools near me.

If they gave up the booty shorts in favor of gi pants, I'd be all in.

The shorts are awesome. Comfortable, no restriction of movement, and they're not as tight as vale tudo shorts. I highly recommend.

I bet they make my booty look good too.

I've always liked their shorts tbh as I don't like board shorts due to them restricting movement. I still prefer gi pants though.

You guys should just get modern grappling shorts, they don't restrict movement at all. I like this brand a lot.

Not sure why the need for sambo gear, besides living out fantasies of being an Eastern European judoka/sambo beast.

I like.

But it is fun when people ask me 'oh, you know Sambo' and I get to reply 'no, I just like the shorts'. And I think they were $20.

I miss Sprawl Grappling shorts. I guess they went out of business.

I have a pair of Hayabusa MMA shorts and Gracie Jiu Jitsu board shorts and I can't complain. Neither of them really restrict movement due to the splits in the side.

Splits in the side make no difference if you have tree trunk legs.

I felt like I was wearing jeans with my hayabusa shorts.

I have very thick legs and the 40 Thieves shorts work great. I would always stay away from Asian made apparel like Hayabusa, Asian made and designed clothes almost invariably fit terribly for non-Asians.

So, who do you guys think is the hottest female Judoka right now (or male if you're into that)?

My favorite is no secret...

They look tight as shit, but if they're comfortable, they're comfortable.

One thing I like about the kurtka/booty shorts combo is that they're pretty fixed in price. One set will cost you a buck fitty, and that's it. There is no concept of "Sambo fashionistas" due to the lack of over-commercialization.
