Coaching Official Coaches and Trainers Discussion

Speaking of Norwegians this is Iskander (blue). When he came to Vegas with the others he was very fleet-footed, moving around the perimeter of the ring. I noticed he had very good ring IQ, and could punch with both hands. We worked on rotating in smaller circles, and planting his feet more with his punches, as well as standing his ground:

Lots of gems there, thanks for sharing. I specially liked that bit when you described the trainers in Philadelphia gathering together at the end of the day to share info and collaborate. I know that it happens down here with the trainers from the national team, but it should also happen more in the regional level and spontaneously between trainers, too.

theres a small group of us here in Portland (and a Seattle gym as well) who regularly spar together and compete against each other in local events. I can trust them to give me a fair assessment of a potential match up if I ask and I always return the favor. It’s nice and helps us as a community consistently put boxers out who make it to compete on the national stage.

Lol sadly that will never happen here in Australia. Every single gym and coach tends to be out for themselves and they all have fragile egos. You've never met more frail bird egos until you've met some of the coaches around this country. It's likely why Australia is rarely competitive on the world stage because no one here cares about the growth of the sport they only care about lining their pockets and milking their fighters for everything they're worth and then talking shit about that fighter when he finally leaves to go to a new coach.
 
Golden gloves tournament today. I’ve got Sam again (this time at 132 where he belongs) and tia who’s boxing down at 146. It’s 4:45am, we’re meeting up to drive down to Eugene, Oregon for weigh ins at 8am.

I heard this years ago from Bianca Elmir when she was regularly visiting Vegas. She said the same thing back then.

The state of the sport here is pathetic because of all the dickheads that only think about making money off other people. It's why I stepped away from the sport.

I feel this way about the US honestly. But my most lucrative offers are from Canada or Scandinavia, and while I MUCH prefer the social atmosphere in those places, it's just too costly to get a family of 5 there.

So there's only one answer:

Create the environment I want. Which I'm working on. The idea is if I create this environment it will draw talent from the shittier places until the shittier places are left in a "sink or swim" scenario.

My girl tia got a walk over at 146. Straight to regionals. Sam pulled a slick southpaw who doesn’t hold up well to pressure but knows how to move. Decent draw for us, day 1.
 
Aaaaaand the southpaw blew his shoulder out of socket 20 seconds into round 1.

it was a 6 man bracket on a 2 day event so now tomorrow we might fight either a good boxer who should of gone pro years ago or a wild brawler. Or we get a by and have to fight the winner or tomorrows fights at a later date.
 
We pulled the technician, a guy who should have gone pro years ago and has won the state gg tournament a few times in the past.

Tough fight for us, but if we win it will truly prove Sam deserves to represent Oregon.

the kid showed tremendous heart and good acumen.

it was a six man bracket for a two day tournament so that means we have to box the other winner from yesterday at a later date to say who gets to be state champion

Speaking of Golden Gloves here is Cristian sparring with the defending Nevada GG Champ at 147. Cristian is 135, and 15 years-old here (he turned 16 recently). Logan is 18, and it may seem like he's not doing a whole lot but that's mainly because he finds Cristian elusive and he gets befuddled when he cant just hit a guy.

Logan's Coach is Frankie Avelar, an Olympian for El Slavador who once fought a young DLH.

christian has that real good put pressure but make you miss thing down. ONe thing i noticed though is that he did seem to get tagged by that stiff lead jab (probably the only punch Logan could land with any regularity) when he reset to his stance. Why was that opening available?
