Christians have never been able to square the circle in regards to Jesus' own words on his return. This very fact led to absurdities like the Wandering Jew, and other such nonsense. Jesus thought the world (he, like the other uneducated tektons of his time, would have known about very little outside the Roman Empire) was ending very soon, as he thought he was the messiah, to rule as king of kings at the right hand of the power, as he put it. He was quite clear on this, unlike most of his other inane preachings.

I think the implication is that we shouldn't be looking for a human messiah (one charismatic leader) to solve our political problems. We all have to do our bit.
