Lol at "Adams fucked him on the way out". Adams' last budget was $115B, Mamdani's proposed budget is $127B. The added deficit is HIS.

For reference, Florida has 25 million people and the budget for the entire state is $12 billion less than Mamadani's proposed budget for NYC's 8 million people.

He has to be compliant with the Financial Emergency Act, which forces him to balance the budget with GAAP accountancy principles. This Act came about amidst a 1970s financial crisis and it exists so that the city doesn't go bankrupt no matter what moron is in charge (Adams). The NYC Financial Control Board oversees the City's budget plans.

Adams had to report his compliance to the board throughout but "hid" an additional $5.4B shortfall that Mamdani was not aware of during the campaign. Mandani said Adams deliberately underfunded essential services in the budgeting that they are required to fufill by law (homeless shelters, etc). Mamdani argues that Adams mislead the public and board about the fiscal health of the city for FY26. So, in essence, now Mamdani can't do the more ambitious things he campaigned on and now has to raise taxes to cover the gap. Mandani wants to shift the budget balancing burden to the billionaires, but Hochul is relying on the trope that the billionares will all leave and refuses. So now he's going to the media and putting it to public opinion to leverage Hochul into changing her position.

A lot of his "free stuff" proposals he made through the campaign have been shifted to other financial years or scaled back as a result. However, even if they stopped all his socialist proposals, they'd still have a budget crisis. Adams is spinning this, but he is an idiot and corrupt and shouldn't be believed. This kind of crap is to be expected, there's a reason NY wanted Adams out.

The current and past comptrollers are backing Mamdani on this.

Yea I'm tracking some of the situation, that is a real inherited budget crunch under GAAP/FCB rules, limiting Mamdani's ambitions and forcing tough choices/tax fights.

You realize that New York City already has the highest combined income taxes of any city? And the worst corporate tax rate (18%) with Local & State combined.... And that's before Federal.
