NRA & The Surgeon General

Sounds like the NRA and the other gun organizations did exactly what their members would and did want.

This is why gun controllers hate "fly over" country.

One may disagree with or simply fail to understand the positive conception of guns, but adopting the rhetoric and imagery of public health doesn’t resolve the cleavage in American society between those who honor firearms and those who deplore them.

ETA: On the other hand - perhaps O knows, deep in his bones, that pro-Gun Rights groups would reel in buckets of cash from supporters if/when this AG candidate received any serious air time.

It can't be 2008 forever.

Has this proposed nominee for SG expressed gun control views in a professional capacity or otherwise indicated he would use his position as SG to push for stricter gun control? If so what has gun control got to do with the SG; sounds almost like an activist judge.

Well this kind of shit, on a national level.

Denver family physician Jeffrey J. Cain, MD, encourages physicians to give patients with well-visit appointments a questionnaire that includes asking if they keep firearms in their homes. Physicians should discuss safe storage of firearms with patients who say they have guns at their residences, said Dr. Cain, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

This piece of shit motherfucker wants to turn firearms into a medical issue. Fuck him.

One could make the argument that the NRA wields just as much, or even more power in Washington D.C. than Barack Obama.

Obamas first real defeat as President was to the NRA. Obama failed to pass an assault weapons ban, and he failed to get the universal background check.

Watch Obama grumble, huff, and puff over his gun control loss:

Now the NRA has, in essence, blocked Obama's nominee to surgeon general due to his stance on gun ownership.

I think it's about time to increase my NRA membership to a lifetime membership :icon_chee

'Muricans....

I just registered three more AR's yesterday. I wonder how much my risk factor increased.

Oh well, its not like this clown will be able to influence policy.

The Royal "we": The enlightened people living on either one of the coasts, who bear disdain for the scum living in fly-over country, as they clutch their guns (and/or bibles).

The spot-on assessment of Lesnar in Ultra's sig line tho... dat's good.

So this guy, in a position to have zero influence on gun policy, thinks that for some populations guns represent a public health problem (which you can't reasonably argue against) and he should be kept out of a position he's quite qualified for?

I don't support further/all existing gun legislation but this sort of opposition is why the pro-gun right is sometimes lampooned.

Here's a part of the article I take some exception to.

If the Surgeon General says guns are a health issue I think people will take that more seriously than some random Congressman. I think it's not correct to say that this position has no impact on public perception/policy. I use cigarettes as an example. If there was no value/influence to the holder of this position's opinion on health related matters then forcing tobacco companies to print the SG warning on their packaging would make zero sense. Somehow though people feel it makes a difference and the practice continues. I know I took it more seriously as a kid due to that warning. It just sounds so official and apolitical.
Utter nonsense. Has anyone known who the SG was since Coop? The only reason people knew who that was because of the silly uniform. Honestly if this thread had been "First SG in 25 years being considered", I doubt anyone would have batted an eye.

That's how I feel about you. Go fuck yourself.
If pressed, prior to this report, could you have stated with certainty that the office of the Surgeon General was currently filled or even that it still existed? Do you have any idea what the duties of the Surgeon General are? Do you know what the SG is "general" of?

The answer for me, and I'd guess most americans and probably you, would be a no to all of these.
