NRA & The Surgeon General

Utter nonsense. Has anyone known who the SG was since Coop? The only reason people knew who that was because of the silly uniform. Honestly if this thread had been "First SG in 25 years being considered", I doubt anyone would have batted an eye.

I don't believe anyone with common sense believes that a headline saying, "Surgeon General says Guns is a healthcare issue" will NOT affect public opinion in the gun control issue. Doesn't even matter what the SG's name is. All people will see is "Surgeon General" and that's that. They will take his word for it because they see him as a scientific figure without any bias, and has no political propaganda to push.

If this guy wants to be Surgeon General (totally bypassing the Land Navy ranks of leftenant and assistant general) all he's got to do is publicly state the obvious: The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

This is some pretty amusing hysteria about a completely irrelevant posting.

I don't believe anyone with common sense thinks that the Surgeon General will make a damn bit of difference in this discussion. It's the fucking Surgeon General a position that people barely know exists and which is pretty clearly not closely related to this issue.

I disagree. One person at work said fish oil decreases your chances of getting prostate cancer, now half of my department started taking fish oil capsules. And this person is a fucking nobody.

The Surgeon General has a soapbox to stand on. It's a very important position. His title is printed on every fucking cigarette box and every alcoholic beverage in the country. You are telling me that he will influence ZERO amount of people out of the 320 million fucking people in the country?

I vaguely remember there was also a black woman who expressed politically-untenable opinions on masturbation.

So if that's out then a radical view on guns is clearly impossible.

I had to look that up. Yeah, 20 years ago an SG said something to the effect of teach kids to masturbate so they maybe fuck each other less. Pretty funny.

Well people are stupid but the SG's soapbox on an issue like this is going to be pretty minimal and, unlike with cigarettes, the science doesn't clearly support a gun restriction stance.
Like I said, most people likely don't even know the SG is still a position and frankly this person is qualified for the job.
If this guy were being considered for an ATF position I might consider the issue relevant, as it is, it is stupid hysteria and dick waving by the NRA.

........or how about not letting the bad guy get a gun in the first place?!

I see that fucking retarded "good guy with a gun" argument way too often on here.

How else is one supposed to reward the co-founder of "Doctors for Obama"?

And the diversity aspect of this can't be ignored - the appointment of a Yaley should help close the lead Harvard has held for so long at the WH.

That at least would be a mildly relevant criticism, of course the guy is still qualified for the position.

Yeah, demonstrates some real inclusivity by Obama to go out of his own group on this.

lmfao.

I don't think its such a big deal. I'm sure the patient can refuse to answer and guns are a huge risk factor if combined with depression as they're easily the most effective way to commit suicide.
So this guy, in a position to have zero influence on gun policy, thinks that for some populations guns represent a public health problem (which you can't reasonably argue against) and he should be kept out of a position he's quite qualified for?

I don't support further/all existing gun legislation but this sort of opposition is why the pro-gun right is sometimes lampooned.
I'm with you on this. I'm a 2nd amendment guy but this seems like unnecessary flexing by the NRA. What could the SG even to do in regards to guns?
