That's actually a reasonable defense strategy at times. Sometimes its better to undermine the evidence of guilt rather than argue innocence outright. This is especially common if there is concern that the "evidence" of innocence will further expose your client.

There are two common reasons for this that are relevant here. The first is that new witnesses create exposure for impeachment, and a lot of stuff can get in through impeachment that isn't otherwise admissible.

The second is that it can get you exposed to witness tampering/evidence tampering under the right circumstances, some of which appear to exist here.
