North/South or Side Control

Gerbil had a good set of n/s attacks that I've been messing around with.

No gi - North/South, Marcelo's N/S choke all day!

Gi - Side control. I will take side control over the mount and back mount any day!

Transitioning straight to northsouth when you pass but don't have a far side underhook is good

correct me if i'm wrong, but is it even possible to N/S choke someone starting from north south? I'm pretty sure all N/S choke setups start from side control.

I just don't understand why people are citing this as a submission option.

You can easily set up a NS choke from full north south position.

No, you can definitely set up the NS from North-South, at least depending on how you define North-South. If you define the North-South position as being completely parallel with the opponent (as when finishing the NS choke), then yeah, there aren't that many viable setups, but I think of North-South as a 'corner hold' where you are off at a slight angle to one side. I hit the North-South choke off of an over-under (or double over) control in this position, from the seatbelt when the opponent runs his shoulders to the mat escaping into North-South, or switching sides when my opponent turns in to block my first NS choke attempt.

yes it is, its much easier from side control though, if you are trying to do it straight from NS, it leaves you way too exposed to be roll over,

I will usually set up the NS choke from side control. If they defend and tuck their chin or turn their head toward my ribs I might bail out to full north south position and then quickly attack their neck again from there.

Thats my favorite position, 45 degrees more less, when I'm fighting guys much bigger and stronger than me, then I drop my weight almost all on the shoulder...you have good control and you are 1 step away from the choke
