Hey guys

At my gym we've been doing lots of Side Control techniques lately. Been working on maintaining side control, using Scarf hold, smart knee, knee on belly etc... Though I'm getting more comfortable in Side Control, I'm very interested in North/South, but only one blue belt at my gym seems to prefer it.

Is it a viable position to aim to control or am I better off Utilizing side control.

Have you guys had luck from North/South?
Are there lots of options for attacks from North/South?

Let me know guys thanks, oh any vid links would be appreciated as well, thanks guys

It's a good position for maintaining, I often end up there at the end of guard passes since passing straight to side control can be tough against good re-guarders, but I never stay there long. You can attack kimuras and N/S chokes from there, but most other submissions of positional improvements will require going back to side control. It's hard to force many attacks from there.

It can be a good pining position especially in Gi and there are certain cases when you need to switch from side control to nort south and then back to side. It's in my opinion a position that mustn't be neglected.

Thanks guys

I'm going to start experimenting with it. I noticed with my current Offense I hesitate too long in side control, I'm hoping I can try and use North/South to help me create more openings transitioning back and forth.

Thanks again

I actually stay in 45 degrees, thats how I control my opponents better, I dont stay too long, I move around, but since my go to move right now is the north south choke, that position is the best for me, not in side control nor in north south, I get one arm across my opponents head and one in on the hip, so he cant reguard... when I feel it I have space, I wrap the head and go for the NS choke... once you have achieved a good north south choke, is ridiculous easy to finish any roll once you have achieved that position. I think after a good 1 year I have developed a pretty good choke (take in consideration Im talking about white to purples)

What the hell is smart knee?

Also why are people posting Submissions 101 videos?

What the hell is going on here?!?!?!?!

By the way N/S is a great position. Transitioning from side control, to N/S, and back and forth, is better.

Because in reality, Submission 101 does provide some good instruction. Do some research on Ari Bolden, you'll see that he's got some good credentials behind him, such as a brown belt in BJJ.

I've done plenty of research on Ari Bolden, enough to know that he did most of his most popular videos while a blue belt at best, that he wore a black belt in many videos which he had since taken down, that he tried to brush it all under the rug, and that he's not someone I want to see people supporting or promoting. I've also seen him compete.

Smart Knee is what my instructor refers to when your holding side control and your opponent is trying to escape is always keeping your knee to their hip.

Just an easy drill to remember, we rotate through, Smart-Knee, to Scarf hold, to side control, to knee on belly.

So we cover most escapes when they're trying to make space and get out from underneath, but using the "Smart Knee" (Knee to hip) just gets them to tire themselves out while they shrimp around.

Gotcha. Never heard it called that, but I use it every single time in side control.

It's worse when you don't detect my sarcasm because then I think people think it's possible that I genuinely think Ari Bolden's a good teacher.

There's a lovely drill that can be done to work a smooth heavy transition flow between them.

Use a partner or a heavy bag on the mat. Pin your chest on the bag or partners chest in side control, move to north south with only your feet and chest having contact and most of the weight on that chest.

Go from side to ns to other side, and back. When that feels good you can go side to ns to side to kob to the other side to ns, etc.

Just flow it with lots of weight from the chest (unless in kob obviously). This drill is a great workout and will keep your pressure heavy going into and out of ns.

ts, please dont EVER go to submissions 101, unless the technique is being shown by someone else than ary, this is once again, a lame version of the choke... ary is showing a version that requires you to make too much space once in north south, it can be done, but normally, the easiest way to get the choke is transitioning from side control to NS with the choking arm sunk, or at least to choke with the arm that you have already passed... this is horrible, he is showing it from side control, doing the right steps to control a secure transition to NS, but instead of choking with his left arm (the arm thats already over the ukes face) dude moves the head to the other side to choke with his right arm:icon_cry2... is really really not that hard to show on video these time, but this guy keeps fucking it up...

this is marcelos version

this is monsons version

How does submissions 101 attract legit instructors like Vinny and James Foster?

That makes me sad :(

But...but...but...

but Ari showed me how to do the Pentagram choke... :icon_cry2
