Watching the replay of last night's fight. Does anyone else think that Bernard Hopkins is pretty much awful in the booth?

I like Bernard for some reason. But I found myself shaking my head a couple of times at what he was saying. I can't remember exactly what it was.

That's a tough job. I remember Joe Rogan defending Mike Goldberg once, saying that it's easy to fuck things up in the moment with so many different stimuli around you. I can agree with that, but I'm horrible at speaking. I'm only moderately better when I can type out my thoughts with time, but if you engage me in conversation I feel like I'm having a stroke.

I like Roy for color. I like hearing Ward too, he's just not very colorful. I like hearing his perspective on boxing though. Foreman was good when he wasn't bickering with Merchant (some people will argue he was better then). People gave SRL some shit but I didn't mind him so much. Marv Albert drove me crazy though.

The problem I have with Bernard, is that he is supposed to be the expert boxer in the booth but he never says anything too insightful. He's just kind of another body in the booth, echoing similar insights but without the articulation. Every once in a while he'll say something I don't even understand, like, "Kovalev just threw a right hook, you very rarely see a guy who can throw a right hook in this division." Light heavyweights can't throw right hooks? I had no idea they were such a rarity.

I didn't like Roy at first, but I think he's gotten better. Maybe Bernard just needs practice and will improve over time.

The right hook thing was probably just his experience. But yeah, it sounds weird.

It's undoubtable that he knows a lot about boxing. But he's not the most articulate guy. It's not that he can't talk, he'll talk for days. But I don't think he really expresses his ideas they way he wants.

Great doer, not a great teacher. Yet, anyway. Part of me wonders if he'll open up more once he retires. But he's already pretty open as is, except for releasing training footage. It's weird, everyone remarks about Floyd's lack of sparring videos, but there's even less of Bernard.

Yeah, Bernard's problem isn't his clarity, it's his ability to vocalize what he thinks quickly enough for it to still be relevant to the action. I don't doubt he's plenty intelligent, and I know he knows boxing, he's just not a natural in the booth.

Danny Garcia said Bernard was the hardest puncher that he's ever sparred or fought with. I guess there's a clear size difference, but it was still an interesting comment.

I would love to see it. I wonder who else Danny has sparred at that weight.

Bernard's technique is almost flawless. He knows how to maximize the leverage in his shots. I'd bet some of it is the surprise that Bernard could hit so hard with such small punches. He rarely winds up, he just shoots from the hip. And because he knows how to use his body weight he puts everything into those small punches, and they end up not being that small.

rewatched Hopkins/Trinidad recently

that was a masterclass by hops there. Hopkins made Tito miss all night, clinched at will, and slipped through his guard easily.

I always wondered if the story Lampley (I think it was Jim anyway) told during the fight was true; about the ad tattoo'd on his back and how he put all of the money on himself to win.

Tomoki Kameda vacates his WBO BW belt, after WBO wouldn't consider his fight with Jamie McDonnell a unification.
Al likely whispered in his ear.

I watch a channel called Test tube on youtube and they do a lot of "how powerful is *insert country*" vids. This week they did an episode on how powerful is the Philippines and they just spend a good chunk of it promoting Manny vs Mayweather. It ends with a note about where to go if you want more info on the fight.

They're good short burst educational vids on different countries normally. Worth a look anyway.

Why is Dubai so rich?
